Up hill and down dale: the Yorkshire Veteran Car Run 2024

Travelling to the UK from the Netherlands for a veteran car rally regularly involves using a trailer, working out whether ULEZ applies, finding car parking in a busy cities, quite apart from the time spent preparing the veteran car. When the invitation arrived from Daniel Ward for his proposed Yorkshire Veteran Car Run(open to all pre-1905, and 1 and 2 cylinders up to 1914) in June this year, the entire enterprise seemed significantly more straightforward: the distance from my home to Rotterdam is 50km, the ferry from Rotterdam to Hull takes c.12 hours, providing enough time to relax, watch a football game, enjoy the refreshments aboard including , and get some sleep. The drive from the port to Ripon is a perfectly manageable 120km. Still a challenge with our one-cylinder Jackson, we saw no point in taking the trailer. Well, we were in for an adventure.

By the time we arrived on Friday afternoon it was already a wonderful day so far. Being used to the Dutch flat roads, the Jackson had to prove itself and had some issues with overheating. With several stops at farms, and mostly pubs to cool down (both car as passengers), it took a few hours before we arrived at Hollin Hall, Ripon, the base for the event. Here we found a hive of activity. Some people had arrived early to have time to look at one of the finest collections of veteran motor cars in the world; even frequent visitors were treated to the sight of a newly finished building, complete with clocktower, stocked with a staggering range of nineteenth century cycles, recently acquired. Members of the Veteran Car Club Dating Committee were busily inspecting vehicles, others were calling upon the services of Mick, Oliver, Andy and Robert, the resident mechanics and support crew for the weekend, to help sort out a few last-minute technical issues, or perhaps to receive reassurance that an unusual noise was nothing to worry about (for the time being).

It was clear that this was an event of some scale: over 60 motor cars dating from an elderly but beautifully refurbished 1895 Peugeot and an 1898 Lutzmann single cylinder carriage, to a slightly younger batch of steamers, with a wide range of French, British and American vehicles in between. Participants had gathered from the USA, Turkey, the EU, and all parts of the UK. It was truly an international gathering, with young drivers well represented.

The first night the rally crews were sent off around Ripon to find answers to written questions, most of which involved visiting one of the many pubs in the city. Daniel wasn’t necessarily looking for correct answers: irreverent or irrelevant ones would do if the responders could demonstrate creativity or wit. This was just as well since after the seventh order at the bar, clarity of focus was fading fast but we did our best and found out on Sunday that we have won by having the most creative answer.

Saturday was the Concours day in Harrogate. An impressive town at any time, but with glorious sunshine and crowds eager to see all the cars displayed, ask questions, and have their photographs taken, the atmosphere was carnival-like. It was just as well that a trip to Bettys tea rooms was on the agenda for a High Tea-style lunch. There were also several other pubs, antique stores that we visited  around the concours.

In the afternoon we drove back to Hollin Hall for some slight adjustments to the car before we headed off again for the evening drive out for dinner. There were 2 pubs booked, one for the slower cars, and one for the lager cars. The drive back was beautiful, it was the longest day of the year and by the time we arrived back at Ripon, the light was beautiful when the sun went down and we only heard the sound of the monocylinder.

Sunday was a day for driving through Wensleydale, 100km of some of the most impressive scenery in Yorkshire, we were told, and significantly more hills than in the Netherlands (which is not difficult). Not that we saw that much of the countryside that day – a broken half shaft on the 1909 Jackson halted our progress early in the day. And so, while the rally made its way to Leyburn, then to a lunchtime hog roast near the River Ure, and a gentle drive home in warm sun, we were back at Hollin Hall with Jos van Genugten, my co-pilot, navigator, and skilled engineer, who spent the afternoon making a new half shaft out of a piece of steel that was in stock at the Wards.

By dinner time the car was back together and ready for the road, just in time for us to hear the adventures that others had experienced during the day. There were plenty of hills, but careful plotting of the routes had ensured that even the smaller cars had made it home. There was a rumour going around the dinner tables on the Sunday evening just after Daniel had entertained the gathering, that a re-run of the event was planned for 2025 – let’s hope so.

A superb and hugely enjoyable event. Great company and great cars. The Wards excelled themselves in initiating and facilitating an extremely worthwhile weekend. From the car drop off at Hollin Hall mid afternoon on Friday until pick up on Monday morning everything worked well and smoothly. Lovely to visit Harrogate and have a drive out on Saturday evening (you are right, Daniel, veterans are at their best in the evening!) and then up, and down, Wensleydale on Sunday. A perfect weekend.

A remarkable gallery of venerable vehicles for aficionados and the uninitiated alike. However, whilst I applaud the sentiment expressed by M. Lalanne, we must not blur the distinction between the passive exhortation of "il faut organiser" and the inclusive, but vaguely anonymous "we must organise." Who are these mythical heroes, "we"?
These events take up an inordinate and unimaginable amount of time, effort, and bureaucratic frustration... just ask the V.C.C. and V.S.C.C.
Bon chance, M. Lalanne!

Well done to all these temerary types, and please continue to show us these cars on the roads. That's why they were made and in this way you will encourage young people to learn to drive and maintain them. One outing a year for the London-Brighton is not enough, we need to organise at least one outing a month in every country in Europe.

A rather special rally based at the beautiful setting of Hollin Hall. The cars lined up in Harrogate on Saturday set the splendid tone for the weekend, and what a stunning array of cars they were too. Sunday's route took us through some of the North's most scenic countryside and luck was with us as the weather was perfect. All rallies take an enormous amount of work and planning and this was evident in every aspect of this event.

This was an exceptional event to take part in; the high points were many and will last long in the memory. The buzz in the yard at Hollin Hall as cars were cars being fettled and fixed; the late evening run back from Boroughbridge with the Wolseley (finally) flying along on all cylinders and being chased across the top by Shane's big Panhard; the atmosphere in Massam as the cars gathered and of course the celebration of a motoring weekend unfettered by traffic back at Hollin Hall on the Sunday night. Put simply this was an outstanding event which was clearly meticulously planned.

What an impressive line-up and well done to recover so quickly from a small inconvenience. An excellent event going by the report.
