Live from Salon Rétromobile 2024
Thousands of visitors have come flooding through the doors of the Expo Porte de Versailles. Hundreds of hugely desirable historic vehicles have been admired, and one or two large sums of money have changed hands. Yes, Salon Rétromobile 2024 has been a roaring success. On the PreWarCar.com stand we've had an especially nice time, chatting to visitors who've had lots of questions to ask about our own exhibits: the unrestored 1901 Laperrelle KBD10 tonneau, the 1907 Itala 35/45hp Peking-Paris replica, the ex-Achille Varzi 1929 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 SS Zagato Spider and the Eritrean 1933 Lancia Dilambda racing special.
We've had the additional privilege of being joined by the Royal Automobile Club, which, apart from being Britain’s oldest and foremost motoring organisation, is also responsible for the annual London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. Representatives of the Club have been on hand to take questions about the Run, and explain what’s involved to anyone who might be thinking of taking part.
Of course, ours is but one stand among many, and enthusiasts for pre-war cars have had no trouble finding dozens of fascinating vehicles to keep them busy for the day. In fact, for many, a day is scarcely enough. As mentioned in earlier previews, Rétromobile has been celebrating the centenaries of MG and the Autodrome de Montlhéry with some excellent displays. In addition to Old Number One and ‘Goldie’ Gardner’s record-breaking EX135, the MG display includes the ex-Rivers Fletcher TB and one of 10 original racing R-types. The Vintage Revival Montlhéry stand is as good as promised, with the Leyland-Thomas replica and Hotchkiss streamliner among the highlights, along with more eccentric machines such as the 1931 Chevalier Bol d’Or and the 1934/39 SEFAC Grand Prix.
It might not be supposed that there would be much for pre-war enthusiasts in the Paris-Dakar Rally display, but even there we've found a 1926 Renault KZ, which participated in the first rally from 1978 to 1979.
Moving among the dealers and auction houses, we find no end of objects of fascination, from the unrestored 1936 Bugatti Type 57 cabriolet by Graber with the Volante Collection and the 1926 Sizaire 4RI and 1908 De Dion-Bouton 30hp Roi-des-Belges with Auto Veteran Company, to the 1928 Omega Six and 1931 Nacional Pescara with Aguttes. Club displays represent virtually every significant French marque, including Bugatti, Delage, Delahaye, Amilcar, Salmson and Hispano-Suiza, while the Club des Teuf-Teuf is celebrating 125 years of Renault with a superb display of veteran, Edwardian and vintage models.
That’s only a fraction of what has been on display. If you visited this year, we hope you've enjoyed it as much as we have, and if you couldn't make it then we'll hopefully see you next year!
