Update: Raul Valkila from Finland sends this advert for a book called "The greatest of all tests", which contains selected statements from the owners who praise the Woods great economy.
Previous text: Another US cyclecar, also a tandem, but not yesterdays quiz car... ;-) After several prototypes its inventor Francis A. Woods from Chicago, started producing the Woods Mobilette. It was a two-seater spider-ish affair that had tandem seats and was powered by a 12hp water-cooled four-cylinder. The Mobilette was advertised as 'America's First Cycle Car' and one of the slogans was ‘Built like a watch and ownership will not cause tuberculosis of one’s wallet’. Price wise that was certainly true because from the first model in 1913 till the last one in 1916, its price remained fixed at $380. The cycle cars were made in Harvey, Illinois and an article in a local newspaper (topix.net) stated that the factory turned out thousand cars a month at the height of its production. Although the Woods Mobilette was sold in Europe as well as the USA, we find that number hard to believe. We know of only a few survivors (google.com); surely when made in such numbers, lots more would have withstood the wear and tear of time? (Click photo for Dutch advertisement; collection Rutger Booy)
