A Maserati gearbox Mystery (Update: no Maserati gearbox!?)

This interesting gearbox came in with the parts adverts last week. It intrigued us immediately. How to date this box without being an expert? Well much larger you cannot depict the Maserati logo so that's a start. So yesterday we started to google for the Maserati trident logos. And then the mystery thickened. Although you can find the logo in a thousand varieties they never look like this one.

That is to say, yes the three teeth are very similar to this example. Yet the basis in general will show three thin horizontal lines. Well maybe a simplification to help the fondry. Here we see just two thick horizontal sticks. Yet this simplification doesn't help to understand the column right under it. This one showing a Corintian column which is much more elaborated than in the original logo, check the trident evolution at Maserati 100. Over to you.

Having owned a 1937 Maserati 6cm for several years I would say that any clues as to identification are more to do with the gearbox itself than the Maserati logo or how it is attached. For instance the transmission brake on the rear suggests something far more pedestrian than Maserati. I have seen several Diatto gearboxes and I don't think it is one of those. The most likely answer [in my opinion] thus far has come from Ace Zenek.

Stuart, Type 26 2 seaters derived from Diatto made by Maserati external lever on side for reverse. Gear lever on rear casting with provision for torque tube. This feature is for all prewar Masers, except the V8RI which had a transaxle. ..8CM smaller bell housing convential gear layout then came the gearbox derived from the FIAT 501 or 511 different gear ratios . for the 6CM and 4CL etc The big eight cylinder cars had boxes that had similar looks made by Maserati cast in electron. I know Ive missed a fewmodels out, but the gear lever position and torque tube attachment are the important identification. Maserati tractor well thats athought what about the TM15 Camionette .. Post war though Peter.2

Could this be for a Maserati tractor? No size is stated in the details above, and I could not get the link to the parts advert to work. Ace

Sirs, Since 1967 I have worked on every model of Pre War Maserati, and most post war too. I have never seen a Trident like this and moreover the gearbox isnt Maserati anyway. Kind regards Peter.

Hi, I'm not shure about the logo, but i know that earlier Maseratis have Fiat Gearboxes, The 4 cl maserati have the Gearbox/Case from a Fiat 514/520 or similar. Maybe they just cast a new uper part with the Maserati logo.
