Meet the Titanic! (UPDATE: For Sale at: seven pounds, ten shillings)

And by Titanic we do no mean the sunken ship, but the 1910 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost that was owned by Lord Pirrie of Harland and Wolff, the company that built the Titanic and many other ships. The Rolls later became known as the Titanic Ghost. The picture was made by Derek Wilson who attended the first main event of the Irish section of the VCC in Clonmel. He reports that it was a brilliant weekend including a visit to a Swiss Cottage, built back in the 1800s by local lords so they could roll play as being peasants to amuse themselves. The guided tour is highly recommended, but we preferred this picture of the 1904 Minervette owned by local man Denis Cronnin dwarfed by the 1908 Napier by Shane Hullihan. And talking about large and small, Derek couldn’t resist to start training his 2-year old son.

The Titanic Ghost is a recent replica body on 1910 chassis 1278. I saw it at Pebble Beach in 2005 and at the Irish rally in 2007. You could have bought it in 1950 for seven pounds ten shillings!

Interestingly this Napier was originally owned by Lord Northcliffe ,founder of the Daily Mail newspaper in the UK ,which put up a substantial prize of £1000 for the first flight across
the English channel. The winner was Louis Bleriot who was paraded around the streets of London in this very Napier in 1909.
The " faded & crackled original paint " referred to by Mr.Hicks above was actually a shoddy job in a non-original colour done years ago & had reacted with underlying layers .
It looked quite displeasing in the "flesh" .

It has been given a very sympathetic restoration returning it to its original colouring.
Mechanically little was required, aside from a rebuild of the fuel autovac & a new radiator core of the correct type in the original shell .

Not so sad after all !

While the Rolls is nice, the Napier is a magnificent beast. Sad though to see what has happened to that particular Napier, a car that appeared to be very original until only a couple of years ago, carrying magnificent crackled and faded paintwork. now it just looks like any other restored Napier, very sad.
