"It was late on a Sunday afternoon in 1934. Baby Face Nelson escaped from the Chicago City jail a mile from the main Hudson-Terraplane showroom. He had three buddies who bribed the guards, not a shot was fired. The 4 men walked into the showroom where my dad and a porter were the only ones present. The desperados selected a '34 Hudson 8 sedan on display and the porter used a floor jack to turn the car and get it off the crowded floor back into the service shop. It was checked and gassed up. They locked my father and the porter in the ladies rest room and drove away. They were finally caught at a road block day's later in Missouri. A lengthy gun battle ensued and the car was riddled. One crook was killed, the others wounded and captured. My dad was notified and went to collect the car which still was drivable with 113 bullet holes. He had a local sign painter put on each side "Baby Face Nelson picks Hudson 8 for escape. 113 bullets could not stop this car." He arranged to have the car driven to every dealer in their 4 state selling zone and it later was on display in their Chicago main showroom until mid-1935. I still have several empty .45 caliber cartridge cases (which have 1934 head stamps) which littered the floor of the car and were fired from a Thompson submachine gun and Colt pistols." Dick Trenk
