Mystery T-Head 'Speedwell' 'Simplex' , 'S......' engine? (Upd. no Speedwell)

Chris Martin sends these photos trying to identify this T-Head motor. The engine is in the Motorlife Museum in Australia. The four cylinders are cast in two pairs and the only identifying marks are the cast 'S' on the front cover and cylinder heads together with a cast number #2553 in the covers, a cast number #2554 in the crankcase, and the cast number #2693 in the ignition timing cover.  Unfortunately he did not take any measurements ( if you don't have measuring tool with you, use your hands, a piece of carton and calculate at home!). Anyway Chris says it is too small(click) to be American, and he also heard back from the Sunbeam Talbot Darracq register that they believe it is not a Sunbeam. He is leaning toward Simplex, or possibly an early Studebaker. (editor: how about Speedwell?) He has ruled out Stutz, as they used Wisconsin engines which are different but it is similar to a Mercer. Having said that, it could be European. Anyone who recognises the 'S' logo?
Any help appreciated.

Mercer. Nearly identical.

Note the spark plugs threaded into the sides of the blocks rather than through the valve access plugs as with most T-heads. Not Simplex, Stearns or Sturtevant. Early T-head Studebakers were built by Garford.

It is not Speedwell as they made L head engines and is not Simplex as they used many more studs and nuts to hold blocks down.
