New General Post Office with motorcars?

Many people will be travelling this week. Some go East, other go West.  Many will be seeing New York on the way, and maybe even - despite their mobile e-mail -  will check the New(!) General Post Office, built in 1912. We found this manipulated postcard in the Horwitz collection and discovered the postcard is slightly older than the brass era motorcars suggest. We found the very same building, same photographer, same camera, same point of view, same people in the same position ... yet then with another set of vehicles on this postcard.  Just for the fun of it, compare with today's situation. We love to research pictures! So don't be shy, just send in!

In regards to the Vancouver photo, can any one identify the car to the right of the Packard? We think it might be an Arrol Johnston. The car to the left of the Packard we are sure is a Hudson.1912 was the last year in BC for handmade licence plates with door address numbers put on pieces of black leather. Look at the plates on the Model T's and you will see they have been made by different people. 1912 was also the first year for electric lights on Cadillacs and you can see one, a roadster, next to the Napier landaulette. The roadster going down the road we think is a McLaughlin Buick

This building is supposed to be the replacement for Pennsylvania Station, located across the street and demolished in 1962, an act of civic vandalism that led to preservation laws in New York that actually work. To be called "Moynihan Station" after the late senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan who came up with the idea.

Fascinating from the point of view of a retired commercial artist, who similarly altered real photos in his youth by hand. Of course, nowadays such changes would be brought about by computers, the use of which has come about in the interim.
Except in one more recent case which I will relate, if you allow me, for the edification of your readership, despite it having nothing to do with motoring, it's such a good story.
A colleague was a dealer in the cheaper side of antique art. One day he bought an extraordinarily long water colour view of the frontal elevation of an unidentified country house, fronted by a green lawn with the typical ancient cedars.
Absolutely boring and almost unsaleable.
He carefully painted in a group of young ladies holding bows and arrows in their grasp at one extreme of the picture, whilst at the other was neatly inserted by his careful hand an archery target. The painting then gained a new title "ARCHERY ON THE LAWN" on the mount, and was soon on its way at a vast profit.
If you chose to print this, as a reward I will soon send you some wonderful family photos from pre-war days !
Kind regards to All, Gareth Morgan

Speaking post office photographs here is one you should look at taken in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1912 with eleven fine brass age cars to be seen. There is a good variety from Canadian built RHD Model T's to a couple of Napiers, one a Colonial model with landaulette coachwork. Go to the City of Vancouver Archives and put CVA 99-233 in the search box. Click on the photo to make it larger and you can do this three to where it is about a meter by a meter big. This is a high resolution photo so you can see lots of detail
