Karel Vermeer's old car pictures

Karel Vermeer is a regular photo contributor (both pre-war and post-war) with cars he spots on his many journeys in France. This time he sent a few samples of his early photos: "I have been taken picture's of old cars since 1973. The first picture is a Praga which I took in Rotterdam, 1973. (Editor: for non dutch readers, the registration ending with FH is a white on green dealer registration). The second photo is also from 1973: 'Toy on top of a petrol station'.

I think it is a Morris Eight, registered as TT-83-43. Possibly of interest to car historian Eduard Hatuma who collects car photos with early post-war registrations (of all possible combinations only a small part was used and poorly documented; so only a photo of a car with such a registration proves that this number ever existed in reality... it's a hobby). The third picture is shot outside the Autotron (museum) in Drunen in 1974, and the next two are taken at a company called 'Welcome in Ridderkerk' (1977). The last picture is showing RD-25-61, a Rover parked in The Hague."

Do you have photos from your early car days? We love to hear from you!

The car in Karel Vermeer's second photo is not a Morris Eight but a 1929/31 Morris Minor, the car was at first available with an Overhead camschaft engine and later, for the 1931 model year, with a side valve engine.
The OHC engine is identical to the MG type M midget .
Although there are several pre war minors in Holland most of them are open 2 or 4 seaters, the saloon is quite rare.

Michael Thung

In old photo's the cars not in focus because they were not then of great interest can be more significant today than the one being pictured. To the left of the Citroen camion is what may be a Hotchkiss from about 1938 (?) though the wing line looks wrong. To the rght is an Auto Union- I think!

I agree with Ruud, The 'toy on top of a petrol station'is a Morris Minor. The only 8 with this style of body was the Family Eight which had a longer chassis and 4 doors.

"welcome" in Ridderkerk was a thriving business run by Leendert van Wingerden and his lovely wife Betty. He brought loads of vintage cars from France to The Netherlands with his big car transporter. He was a character , allways unshaven in his old clothes, even at the big swap meets. He did love his old cars, even though they were all for sale. In the early 1980s he moved to a big rural farm in Dussen . He actually stored my model A Ford for free for about a year while i was busy with other projects. Great guy.Later on some serious family drama took place and he finished up broke on the street. Wonder if he is still alive.
