A Paris-Madrid, Paris-Vienna, Paris- Rouen Mystery? (update: Peugeot and Mors)

Peter Langmaid is an avid collector of old racing photos. Attached you'll find two presumably amateur pics he recently sent :
"A couple of photos of old 'chain driven' racing cars. I have no idea as to make or date but location could be France." We must admit that our first thought was Paris-Madrid, yet we have the feeling these photos are older. More like round the turn of the century. Is it Paris-Vienna, or Paris-Rouen perhaps? No too modern for Paris Rouen ( 1894). Our guess -  a gutfeel strictly based on car design is 1899  Tour de France. Be sure to check also the spectacular second photo. That car also has different size front and rear wheel. Perhaps you can ID cars #62 and #75 or tell us who the drivers are.

I always was of the opinion the larger wheel and tire would give a higher speed, as on a penny farthing bike. I know for a fact anybody with a larger wheel than mine can pass me easily.

A recent discussion on the MTFCA forum discussed the fact that many drivers who raced early cars wanted smaller wheels and tires on the front wheels, they felt it made the car handle much better, and easier to handle if a tire blew out...I'm sure there were engineering reasons for the heftier rear wheels, being the driven and having to absorb torque...

It is Paris-Toulose-Paris of July 1900.Gerald Rose's 'A record of Motor Racing, 1894-1908' has a picture of Ravel's Peugeot and of Levegh's Mors which is similar to that of Antony. See pps.122-124

These photos were taken during one of the many city to city trails in France during the early years. Here we see some images of the Paris-Toulouse-Paris trail, held from 25 to 28 July 1900. Nr. 62 is Ravel's Peugeot (finished 13th), no.75 is the Mors of Antony (finished 6th).

I found a list here - http://journal-le-matin.over-blog.com/pages/Le_premier_Tour_de_France_automobile_Supplement_illustre_du_3_septembre_1899-2640093.html - with what I presume are the start numbers of the entrants in the 1899 Tour and there are no cars numbered 62 or 75.

Maybe it is another event from the same year or a year earlier.
