Ninety years ago the typical Sunday's drive was no pleasure to all pasengers. Especially warm & dry days could be much worse than rainy cold days. Nothing could stop the curse of dust, blown into the air by the traffic. It was the plague of motoring, maybe as bad as today's traffic jams. All kinds of inventions came. Starting with a simple set of goggles in this photo, to special design underbody panels that were meant to keep the dust on the ground. In the pre tarmac years sometimes the roads were sprayed with oil(!) to pancake the dust. The windshield was a pre 1900 invention (by Hotchkiss?), the windshieldwiper came later - 1905 Mary Anderson (read: article by Mary Bellis). According to sender of the photo Bob Swanson the car (click here for full image) might be a 1907 Columbia. Kit Foster added that another contender might be Winton, 1907.
UPDATE II by David Cochrane: "....what most people forget is that the dust contained a lot of dried horse manure. Not pleasant to breathe!"
