Pre-war cars wanted for Germany's Classic Sprint

In 2006, Germany hosted the first ever Altmühltal Classic Sprint, and the event's popularity and renown has grown since then to the point that it is now referred to by some as Germany's Mille Miglia. Entries are restricted to around 120 cars, and the event is always fully subscribed, but this year the organizers have partnered with PreWarCar.com to encourage more pre-war models to take part.

Uwe Wießmath, who is also involved with the International St. Moritz Automobile Week and responsible for the pre-war-only Targa Poschiavo Engiadina, has always been eager to welcome pre-war cars to the Classic Sprint. It regularly attracts a selection of cars from the 1920s and '30s, usually between 12 and 25, which always delight the spectators, but this year Wießmath and the other organizers would like to have even more, to better demonstrate the history and technological development of these old cars.

The date for this year's Altmühltal Classic Sprint is 23rd to 25th June 2023. The start and finish point of the rally is Nuremberg in Bavaria, where the participants will meet for the first time on Friday 23rd June in the historic district below the famous Kaiserburg, a mediæval imperial castle. Sadly, more recent historical atrocities have meant that Nuremberg's splendid pre-20th century history often gets overlooked. The city was infamously the scene of Nazi rallies during the 1930s, but also hosted the Allied trials which saw many war criminals punished. Today, this provides the visitor with much to study and reflect upon. The former Nazi rally grounds, which include the enormous Congress Hall modelled on Rome's Colosseum, are preserved as a sobering reminder of the terrible régime. Post-war, some of the neighbouring streets have been put to good use as the Norisring, a motorcycle and motor-car race circuit since 1947.

The Classic Sprint will not only take in the highlights of Nuremberg, but also the fantastic and dreamy Altmühltal, one of the most beautiful areas in Franconia, a region of Bavaria with its own unique culture. All routes lead over winding and hilly country roads, whose gradients can be easily mastered by all vehicles, no matter whether you're in an Amilcar, Riley, Bugatti or supercharged Mercedes. The rest stops and hospitality will let participants absorb the local history and character, in the ambience of such landmarks as the such as the Ellingen Residence, a magnificent Baroque palace, and the KunstSchranne, an historic market building in Weissenburg which now hosts art exhibitions.

The rally is a traditional regularity event, with time-keeping via pressure hoses.

However, the focus is not on the time trials, but on the roads, the atmosphere and the enjoyment. You may be as relaxed or competitive as you please.

Another highlight is the countless fans and spectators who line the streets, cheer on the drivers and sometimes pass food and drinks into the vehicles. The scenery partly resembles a very well-known Italian event and is probably unique in Germany.

The Altmühltal Classic Sprint has another special feature in store in terms of promoting young enthusiasts; because the organizer has been specifically concerned with this topic for many years, young drivers regularly start with vehicles from the time of their great-grandfathers as part of the European Youngster Cup, for participants up to 25 years.

In addition, there is a bonus for all pre-war cars in the time trials as well as a distinc award for the pre-war class. The care with which the organization team caters for the older entries embodies the motto of the Altmühltal Classic Sprint: 'From friends, for friends'.
