PreWarCar of the Week: 1929 Aston Martin LM3 "Works Racing Car"

What do you think when you look at this Pre-War? Pretty impressive don`t you think? If you like to be seen, this Aston Martin `LM3` is definitely your cup of tea.

The story behind it makes the car even more special… It is one of the just seven Aston Martins built between 1928 and 1931 to compete in international races. The third car to be more precise and the only hand-crafted Works Team Aston Martin built in 1929 which was actually raced by company director Augustus Bertelli himself.

This, at the time new “sports model” was much lighter than previous race models. Whereby most of the bronze parts were replaced by aluminium produced ones. Initially, the chassis was fitted with a two-seater pointed-tail racing body with no doors. LM3 had its track debut in the first ever Double 12 Hour meeting at Brooklands with Bertelli and chief mechanic Jack Bezzant sharing driving duties finishing a creditable 5th. After this, many other international events followed.

In 1930 the original body was changed by the factory, presumably because it was too light. Not much later the vehicle became the Works Team Aston Martin development and road test car, lent out to journalists to drive and report on.

Before the car was sold to Peter Farquarsonin 1932, the Astin Martin was re-registered GX599 and 129R was added to the original chassis number. As described by The Classic Motor Hub: “The Aston Martin factory service cards record that in 1939 the car had been sold to R. Churchill of Number 1 Broad St. London and that he had sold the car to David Elwell-Smith in June of 1963 It was subsequently sold to the well-known Aston Martin historian Jim Young who was able to confirm during the exacting restoration carried out in his ownership that the chassis, engine, running gear and coachwork were all correct and original.”

LM3 recently became first in its class at Amelia Island Concours D’Elegance, was exhibited at Pebble Beach and entrant in the last three Mille Miglia’s. This 1929 Works Team Aston Martin, a pure racer with a rich history is currently for sale in our online Marketplace.
