This week`s PreWarCar of the Week is a matching number car which is verified in March 2019 by BMW Classic. A lightweight sportscar with a six-cylinder-inline-engine with a capacity of two litres made for 59kW/80 PS.
The “chassis only” had been ordered by countess Pamela Moy de Sons. One of three daughters of a banker with German family background. As confirmed by the BMW Archives, the chassis was delivered on 27th of April 1938 by the Automag company to the renowned coachbuilder Ludwig Weinberger. Automag was the first BMW franchise dealer and is in business until today.
The countess had a roadster body built with a larger rear and with slightly more space in the interior compared to the standard BMW. Besides this, there is more space for luggage, which makes the car perfect for taking part in long-distance rallies. Which is exactly where the countess used her cars for! Driving the newly licensed BMW 328, she took part in the 1939 Rallye Paris – St. Raphael and won the 2.200-ccm-class. To make the story even better, this was not the only PreWarCar she owned. She also drove an MG J3.
When her husband died, the countess moved to England. She took the BMW with her and had it licensed in June 1939. This way, the car made it through the years of war without any damage. Still, after WII she sold the car.
In October 1961, the car became into the possession of Michael Warrior from Fleet in Hampshire. He used the car regularly and took part in a VSCC event at the Silverstone racetrack. Michael had the car restored and freshly painted. After he kept the car for more than 30 years it was sold to German collector Hans Seibold. The BMW exchanged hands once more before it went to the current owner.
Before the purchase, he had the car checked by the company Feierabend from Wurzburg. As their check was positive, he bought the car. In the first half of 2013, he had it technically restored by 328-specialist Tom Fischer near Rosenheim (Bavaria). All works are documented in invoices, which sum up to a total of € 52 000.
As you have read, over the years the car has been well maintained and cared for. The spacious Weinberger roadster body in combination with the six-cylinder-inline-engine makes this a perfect rally car.
