When Bernard zur Lippe Biesterfeld came to Holland to collect his bride, the future Dutch Queen Juliana, he arrived in a light-coloured 1935 Ford V8 Roadster. They left on their honeymoon in a brand-new 1937 Ford V8 convertible. A few months later Bernard crashed heavily, recovered and bought a new one, a 1938 Club-Cabriolet. The Royal Couple must have had a passion for the V8’s, as they also owned a Woodie and the archives show that Bernhard at some time owned a Matford V8. This was the French version that can be distinguished from the American Ford V8 by the unsynchronised wipers; the “Marchal” headlights and steel wheels instead of spokes. Historian Frans Vrijaldenhoven has extensively researched Bernhard’s automobiles, but has not been able to find out how this car came into the possession of the Royal family. Can anyone help him? UPDATE by Ced Pearce: "The 1935 Ford is actually a Cabriolet with wind-up windows, not a Roadster which has clip-on sidescreens ( you can tell by the top of the door shape)."
