Problems don’t exist

In modern-day speak the word 'problem' doesn't exist anymore. What you're facing instead is a 'challenge'! And did we find just the right challenge for you! It's a partly restored 1936 Frazer Nash BMW 319/45 (even the model numbering is a challenge) that comes up for auction at Herefordshire Vintage Auctions on April 11. After H.J. Aldington took over the Frazer Nash company he acquired the BMW concessionaire for Great Britain and decided to import German-made BMW's with right-hand drive. This is one of those, a cabriolet with a body by Reutter of Stuttgart. We have no idea why the restoration has not been finished, as already a whole lot of money has been spent on it, including a 319 engine that has been rebuilt to 328 specification. If you are ready to accept this challenge, do go and see lot 809, but our advice is to check it over very carefully to see what problems are missing.

Hmmmm. I finally got around to taking a look at the photo and reading the comments when I noticed that the car comes with a complete set of mismatched wheels.

No Mr Editor, Total spent will be; Already spent £80k, Hammer price £35K, yet to spend to complete £30k. All that adds up to £145k.
O.K., the buyer won't have spent it, but that's what the car will have cost in total, isn't it!

editor: I totally disagree! ;-) The total cost of the car is probably 3 times higher when you calculate your way. Start with the new price. Add up all cost since new. Etc. Come on, things don't work like that.

Oh and by the way, 319's didn't have hydraulic brakes, 328's did but they were bigger diameter. Many 319's have been converted to hydraulic, but not many have been upgraded to the larger diameter drums. And the Volvo box, altho a great improvement is not acceptable to the VSCC.

Sorry, I'd better start again!
Estimate £35k, Spent already £80k, amount needed to finish, £25K? Total cost £140k. Cost to Buyer if he gets it for £35k , Over £60k.
Value when complete? Possibly £60k but more likely $45k.
Very marginal to say the least IMHO!

editor: you miscaluclate in my view; the GBP 80 earlier spent are included in the sale of the car (the 35 estimate); so total cost would be 60, not 140.

David Barkers sums do not add up because he assumes that the 319 is sold for£110K.
Actually the estimate is just £30-£35K,although £80K has been spent on the car.And it does have a 328 spec engine too. So the sums DO add up,and the FN/BMW
could prove to be a great bargain!

This car is being advertised on here for £325,000- presumably a digit too many!! The auctioneers have it at £30- £35,000. The restoration job is claimed to be 'almost complete'- which very clearly it isn't. My guess is that the previous owner, having spent an enormouus £80,000- mostly on an engine rebuild- came to realize that coachwork is expensive too- especially when many parts appear to be missing. It's a sobering thought that a very nice fully restored Rolls Royce 20/25 could be had for that £35,000 asking price. A very different car, of course, but one does wonder about real 'value' when it comes to restoring foreign exotics.

I said" £80k spent, Estimate £110k? Further £25k to spend?
Final cost £135k? Final value £55k-£75k?

The sums just do not add up!

Sorry,Misquoted the "Spent" figure, still very marginal!

I do sincerely hope that this dearly beloved site is not slipping into politically motivated 'Eurospeak'. After all, I do consider that my 1932 automobile is, in effect, a time machine that transports me to an earlier (probably mythical) less problematic age. A 'problem' is still a 'stumbling block' regardless of how it is spelt. The 'challenge' is how to solve the 'problem'! Or am I letting my colouring of perception blur my view of reality? Happy Easter .

editor: well of course the above is all very much tongue in cheek as you sure will understand. And be sure to read the subtle twist in Rutger's last line...
