Reinvention of the wheel ? (Upd. Still around...)

Carrick Watson found this photo of an.., ahh, whatdowecallit? Anyway, it was named "The Dynasphere" which was an invention of Dr. J. A. Purves in the early 1930s. Mr. Purves claimed it had great advantages over the ordinary car for work over rough ground. The 10ft wheel was driven by a small petrol motor which, with the drivers seat and shield, runs on inner rails and remains at the bottom.  Steering is done by a system of balancing... like on a skateboard. In this form the wheel was capable of 30 mph! We truly wonder what it would be like to drive it. Does the wheel survive, somewhere, somehow?

VSCC member Geraint Owen (he of "Babs" fame)built one a few years ago, I bet he's still got it!
I saw him demomstrate it at one of our meetings. Remarkable!

There is a guy somewhere in America who builts new ones, mainly with Harley Davidson engines that run also on rails and is connected to the seat of the driver. Steering is with handlebars and goes well, but braking is difficult because the driver flies with the engine up and down untill it stops. He even made one with a V8. There was a discovery program in which I saw it running and actually going. By the way he is wearing shoes with steel plates to give some extra help with braking and balancing.
