The Restor Monocode-Optik Code Mystery (upd.: Headlight or Foglight?)
Rick Carey reports: At the recent Auctions America by RM auction in Ft. Lauderdale the 1922 Citroen B2 Phaeton wore an auxiliary light on the headlight spreader bar that I've never seen before, a Restor Monocode-Optik Code light with a curious lens arrangement. I'm curious about its purpose and function? What is this lights function and how does it work. I've never seen one before."
Update by expert Arnoud van der Sman: " This an auxilliary Headlight (in French 'Code'), the standard headlight of French cars in the twenties had only one position (soemwhere between headlight and dim). The lens will provide better light. Click for copy from brochure. "
editor: we have seen a set of two being for sale in the parts section earlier. Marchal made similar to these. They look nice but hardly produce any light.

Reviving an old topic, I've just bought a pair of these Restor Monocles on Leboncoin (images attached). Like Martin de Little I wanted to fit them with L.E.D.s (for the very same reason; L.E.D.s draw 75 per cent. less current from a six-volt generator than the 45-Watt B21S Marchal bulbs) Finding those L.E.D.s was a bit of a quest (especially because I needed them with negative earth) but I've found them at ClassicBulbs.co.uk. I've also managed to find a new old-stock pre-war six-volt relay with glass fuse and some nice old "éclairage" switches. If anyone can provide some more original documentation on these 'phares' I'd be happy to receive a copy thereof. Thanks!

I have a pair of these lamps mounted on our 1923 Delage DI. I use them as daylight driving lamps. The "bull's eye lens" does not throw out any meaningful amount of light for night-time driving but, with LED bulbs in them, they do catch the attention of oncoming traffic. Why not use the headlights you ask? The headlights are traditional 45W Marchal tungsten filament and draw far more current than the DI's Dynastart can ever produce. The use of LEDs in these lamps is not obvious and does not detract from the originality of the car, but they are very bright and cool-running and the Dynastart will still show a positive charge—just.

In the second image above, the cropped page from a catalogue, the light above has a long hood over it. I have been looking for a pair of these exact lights for a couple of years. Can anyone provide any information or an image from this catalogue that shows all of the details? Thank you.

Marchal as well as other lamp manufacturers made similar lamps. marchal called theirs Le Monocle. The 9 June 1928 L'Illustration has a marchal advert with a sketch showing the use of these lamps. It seems they gave an intense beam of light directed low down at the front of the car (Fog light?). All of the Marchal Trilux series headlamps had these magnifying lense built in to them at the top. Le Monocle obviously was sold as a separate lamp doing the same job.

Just bought almost the same light in Reims a few weeks ago for my B2 . It is from Phares Besnard and with a lamp of 36W just behind the glass lens and even without a mirror behind , it produces a very strong beam.I can mail pictures also of the interior when you ask me. Mail to: [email protected]

I have had an identical lamp for some time and on seeing the Optik Code Mystery published on PWC was looking for an explanation as to the original intended purpose.
I'm not surprised at the editors contribution as to the discussion was that of how poor the lamps function having examined the construction. But would still really like to know what lighting role they were intended to play. No one has managed to enlighten me to date despite my asking well many informed individuals.
Here's hoping some one has come across a period advertisement or some other information that will enlighten us all.

During the WWII to avoid being located and bombed, lot of car had got cap on the light.
The aim is to see a little front the car but be discrete from the sky during the night

That light is to allow the driver to see where the hand-crank is! Seeing what you're doing- while hand-starting Any type of engine- is a really great idea!
