Riley abuse?

Mike Long: "About 17 years ago, as my neighborhood (in Franklin, Tennessee) expanded, I noticed that builders were creating "burn pits" of perfectly good wood. Lacking a truck, I removed the front passenger seat from my 1937 Riley Lynx, tossed-in a ladder with some rope, and started excavating treasures that were then transported home in the Lynx. Sadly, my wife took an in-process picture! Even though it was a small distance and relatively light loading, I'd guess my day's work would have apalled many of my Riley Register fellow members and my local car club ... which has named the car  'Queen Mum'."

editor:
Now we only want to hear from Mike why his car was called 'Queen Mum' . We never saw here going round with bundles of wood, did we?  ( comp5000 )

I had a 1950 Mercedes 170-S Cab B in my early married years. With the top down, I could get 4' x 8' plywood sheet, drywall, and framing lumber in there. Renovated a house that way. I did get some strange looks a the lumber yard, but it never did it any harm.

I have personally met "Queen Mum". She deserves her place in Mike's stable of Rileys.

I ones transported a Zundapp moped in my old DKW convertible, it looked funny me driving that car with the frontwheel of the bike sticking out the backside. It was the only car at that moment to do the job. At the motorway doing 60 mph everybody smiled at me: yes even the police!

A friend in Switzerland did use his prewar Mercedes cabrio as building vehicle. Al his tools, sacks af plaster and wooden scaffolding, just thrown in. But that was in the late 50s this was just an other used car...

Great photo, as Jak says, our cars are a form of transport! Back in the 70's I worked as a barman in a pub, several times we ran out of beer, especially rugby club meets, so I would drive my 1937 BMW Frazer-Nash Saloon to collect one barrel on the front seat, and two on the back seat, to keep the party going! Wish I had taken a photo to send you 40 years on!

I have done similar rescue or recycling jobs in an emergency with a prewar car-its ok if you go about the job carefully.Which means protecting the parts of the car which will be in contact with the load-old blankets, sheets, etc. There may be some of these in place round the Rileys bodywork edges-but I cant see any !

I'm gratified that such practicality is being recognized rather than condemned! As to the Lynx's title ... I believe my clubmates merely respect her "scarred but charming" dignity on the showfields & weekend drives when surrounded by moderns.

When I saw this title I assumed it would be yet another tale of a perfectly good Riley being chopped up to create another'special'. How relieved I was to find that the owner was just using his car! I have no doubt the factory, and most Riley Register members would approve!

And to think I felt guilty because I once drove my old car to work for a week and left it out in the sun and rain while my modern car was being repaired!
