This is your editor squeezing himself in the driver seat of an streamline experiment built in 1933/1934 by engineering student Karl Wilhelm Ostwald, Germany (click photo for the first design). The Röhr-Ostwald is a one-off 4/5 seats streamlined cabriolet based on the chassis of a 1933 Röhr Junior with 4 cylinder aircooled engine. It is very easily said that the design is horrible and that the feeble quality of the coachwork is nothing more than a student's weekend job. But! Take care before judging too quickly! The car was officially registered on 17 August, 1934. The convertible tourer must have looked as coming from outer space when it landed in Ober-Ramstadt. The height alone - 130 cm - was about a full foot lower than average back then. It was conceived & built in the same 1933/34 when Tatra made their worldfamous T 77. And in the same era when Zündap and NSU-Porsche made their 'Volksauto' prototypes (lightauto.com). For comparison 130 cm equals the roofline of a Porsche 356 (check your low roof editor). Try to visualize the dramatic shape like it is on this only remaining photo of the car in action. Interesting to know, the nose of the car is in alloy, the doorskins and rear wings most probably in the very modern 'triplex', thin plywood (relative easy to restore, check sideview). We can be honest in saying that even at a modest price the market is not exactly wild about this car and chances are high that dealer Thiesen from Hamburg will let this car go for peanuts. But don't say we didn't warn you, when this skruffy cinderella comes to the ball as a princess within a year or two. Better have a chat with Thiesen before it's too late (call +49-40-450343-0 )
