Seeking info on this Fiat touring (update: 1914 type E17 , type 56, 52B ?)

We can't help it, we just love this kind of barnfresh photos.

Tim Ruth writes: "Can anyone help me identify the year on this fiat? I just got it, it was in a barn 60 yrs and ran 30 years ago (supposed). The wiring has been messed with, so I'm seeking wiring diagram. The Zenith updraft looks like it's missing something where theres an empty bracket, so any carb info is very welcome. I think there may be a compression release handle near the crank? Of course any pictures of one like this, I can't find one but there has to be one somewhere. Just wondering where to get info on the thing. There are 3 name plates but I can't find anything to mean anything. One has an 'E' with a number so I'm thinking E-series Touring. It has a 140 inch wheelbase, lots of brass, radiator, lights, windshield frame, caps and hubs. Any help is greatly appreciated, I want to get smart before I dig in. I think it's a 3 liter engine. Iit has 2 spark plugs in each cylinder; one on top, one inside. 35x5 wheels, gear shift handle and park brake look just like ones on Jay Lenos' 1917 Botofogo on YouTube. I've seen the fenders on another car but the body is different. The body is aluminim, fenders metal and wood running boards and floor boards. Thanks for anything!"

[quote name="Maldwyn Jones"]I assume your in the US ? This is an American built Fiat, the US plant was at Poughkeepsie, New York. The difference between US & Italian built cars are complex as is the car/frame/engine numbering.
The wheelbase you give suggests the car might be a Type 55 ( E-17 ) made in small numbers between 1917 and 1918.
Dual ignition was typical of some US built cars they experimented with Radiator shapes - your car has the pear shaped rad. but it's looks shorter than the Italian type. Does your car have an electric starter ? All US built cars had electric starters 1915 onwards. Italian built cars had pressed steel wheels after 1913. Look for any numbers on the engine/gearbox aluminium casting, steering box etc.

the brass fiat plate on interior firewall is e-7041 the motor stamp looks like 10-9-16 or 18 its been ground on but id say 16

Buon giorno,

This is most definately a model E 17 Rivieria 140" wheelbase
car produced in the USA with a type 55 engine with a 5 1/8"
bore x 6 3/4" stroke. A very powerful and desireable circa
1916-17 model

Not a 505, they didn't come out until 1919, and are basically a larger 501, or a 4 cylinder 510 depending on how you look at it.

I would say this is a 2B (also known as a 52B). They were build from 1912 and were replaced by the 505. They were made with both square and pear shaped radiators.
