The Smoking Truck Mystery. (UPDATE: 1938-1939 Berliet Dauphine)

In the days when smoking was commonplace, rarely did the actual packets that the cigarettes came in attract any notice. One that did though create some interest among motorists was this new flip-top packaging in the 1970s from the Gauloises brand.
If we ignore the Gauloise winged helmet mascot, the car is either an actual model or a graphic artist’s interpretation of what is presumably a French make (click main pic). Despite various opinions expressed at the time it seems that nobody came up with a definitive identification. Suggestions that can be recalled included Amilcar Compound, late model Chenard-Walcker, plus several American makes, but none provided a perfect match.  If someone out there can identify the car, it would be nice to know.

I am perfectly sure the car is a 1938-1939 Berliet Dauphine . Of course, the car didn't have the helmet mascotte. The actual picture which inspired the artist can be seen in Micheal Sedwicks book "Cars of the 1930 and 1940s". The Dauphine used the body dies of the than revolutionary Peugeot 402, combined with an American-influenced 'sharknose' grille. It looks a lot like a contemporary Oldsmobile. This car was Berliets swan song as a car manufacturer. After the war, the firm concentrated on heavy transport and trucks, before being absorbed by Renault in the 1960s.

Berliet Dauphine "Aerodyne" 1939. Slightly uneasy blend of American-style nose and European (Peugeot) body!
