As soon as Ford’s Model T became popular, many companies started selling kits with which the standard Model T could be converted into a semi-race car. These kits consisted mainly of a lighter body, bucket seats and speed equipment. Many different kits were sold and these racers became commonly known as the Speedster. The Speedster shown here was manufactured towards the end of 1913. It belongs to one of Europe’s biggest collections of Model T and Model A Fords. Tomorrow part of this collection will be auctioned by Bonhams at the RAF Museum in London (lotnrs 614-621). This Speedster has been treated to a ‘body off’ restoration. The car is finished in black with red vinyl upholstery and has polished brass fittings. De-mountable wheel rims, auxiliary water pump and dynamo electrics are also fitted. We happen to know that back in 1913 Ford had a policy that warranty on the Model T would be voided if any accessories were added. Although it’s doubtful this ever happened, we wonder what Henry thought of these Speedsters (nwvs.org)? (photo courtesy Bonhams & Butterfields).
