Star of Essen was... (click )

Between the thousand or more outrageous cars brought to Essen over the last few days it is basically impossible to say which one was the best or most interesting. Still various juries have been busy to point out their favourite candidate. And so did we. We had the choice between great finds, super restorations. one-offs, rare racers, exceptional towncars and about everything the car industry has come up with over the last century. Yet a car like the 1926  40HP Renault presented by Coupe from Madrid is more than its 9 litre shovelnose ahead of the average supercar. The word imposing is an understatement when confronted with the massive dual cowl skiff tourer by Henri Labourdette. The top of the boatdeck is at equal heigth with the shoulders of your 6 foot editor. The car was since new in Spain and re-surfaced only days before the show. Except for the artillery wheels which are cast iron replicas from the originals since the original was not possible to come by in the fifites(?) the car is in amazingly untouched condition. A week of proper maintenenace should bring the car to the road again. It is hard to to make clear what kind of quality is involved in the craftmanship of this picnic mastodont for the well to do of the mid twenties. But examining a detail like the fusebox - better said the fuse-SAFE - gives some idea. We are quite sure we will see this car appear in places...

I was told a different story. The car had its original wheels which could have been reproduced. But because the owner wanted to drive the car, he was advised that these wheels were too dangerous. That why he made them in aluminium.

I am amazed that no one from N.Z. has mentioned George Miharlaviches Renault 40cv. He has been terrorising modern motorists [in a nice way] for around 40 years. There were two cars that went to N.Z. and George has been 'flying the flag' for large Renault's in N.Z. for many years.

The star named "Stella" came on the bonnet only in 1928 with the Reinastalla, Vivastella, Primastella, Monastella. "Stella" was the nickname from Renault's girlfriend.
(editor: it sounds the owner had all sorts of reasons to add the star to his 2 year old car...)

I must absolutely agree with you, this 1926 Renault with Henri Labourdette coachwork was a very pleasent surprise and according to the vendor, this is the most original Labourdette in existance. I would love to see it next to its small 6HP family member also with Labourdette boattail coachwork that resides in the USA at the moment.
