Superior camping in the 1920s

Although in today's world it is quite normal to own a caravan that has everything a normal house has and is in fact a tiny house, in pre-war times it was not very common to take a caravan on a luxury holiday. Gypsies lived in horse-drawn caravans that had everything they needed, but luxury is something else. The 1926 Bertram Hutchings Voyageur Caravan, however, was for the upper class, with its sales slogan ― 'the Rolls Royce of caravans' ― targeting wealthier motorists.

1926 Bertram Hutchings Voyageur Caravan

After spending a holiday in a caravan the previous summer with his newly-wed, Bertram Hutchings started his own horse-drawn caravan business in 1912. Initially for hire, it was successful. Until the First World War, when Hutchings started making caravans for the army. Caravans that could be towed behind a car. After this period the first caravan for civilians was produced, the Winchester, followed by the Voyageur in 1924. A very popular model that remained in production until 1930.

The photos above were taken when a beautiful example was sold by Bonhams Auctioneers 10 years ago. We wonder if the new owner will take a luxurious holiday in it this year.
