Techno-Classica Essen 2023 – In pictures

The 33rd Techno-Classica Essen in Germany takes place this week and the PreWarCar.com team went there to soak up the atmosphere and see what gems might be found among the many stands.

As always, Techno-Classica is a huge indoor show, with a wide variety of cars and stands. First impressions of the show can depend very much on which entrance you use. As a pre-war guy, I took the west entrance, which was the wrong one, because I landed in Hall Three, which was mostly filled with Youngtimers and Porsches of all colours and specifications. It was still a great sight, but not what I was looking for.

Hall Five is where I wanted to be, the atmosphere in which is wonderful, with live music played throughout the day. It contained a brilliantly wide variety of cars, from an early Panhard to several Bugattis. There was a Riley TT Sprite special on the same stand as a majestic Rolls-Royce Phantom I.

As always in Germany, there were several Kompressor Mercedes, which have the power to make your heart burst with excitement. Then there was a beautifully restored MG SA, and a very impressive 1914 chain-drive Mercedes 90hp. Our personal favourite, however, was a very original Three-Litre Bentley 'Red Label' with Vanden Plas bodywork.

Our conclusion is that the 2023 Techno-Classica was worth the visit for us. Although it no longer has the buzz it had in pre-Covid times, there was a lot to see and plenty of nice people to talk to.

OK, OK, OK, that did it. Time to reinstate my passport and put this on next years things to do... and time to meet my European counterparts!
