That is what we call charging in style

Nowadays we see the demand for ultra-modern and super streamlined hybrid, plug-in hybrid or all-electric cars rise. Which is wonderful but also strange in a way. If you know that the first small-scale electric vehicles were invented more then 150 years ago. And that is when you start to wonder why it took so many years to develop properly working and super-fast charging (affordable) cars for daily use. Maybe most important is the (improved) technology, which can actually bring you from A to B covering a reasonable distance without (too many) interim stops to charge the car. In addition to this, as you very likely also have noticed is the increasing interest in more sustainable and environmentally friendly vehicles. This is becoming more important than ever before. But if the production and destruction of the batteries is really more environmental friendly (on the long term), we do not know. So we leave that up to you. We have to say we are very pleased to see there are still some of the pre-war electric cars around which are being used on the road, environmental friendly or not.

There is a lot you can say about electric cars. But there is no doubt this lady drives and charges in style. Thereby coming she is also dressed very classy. And just stopped at a charging station to charge her car. Electric vehicles were always very popular amongst the ladies. As they were simple to operate, did not smell, were not (too) fast and there were no leaks with grease and oil everywhere. I can only see advantages! In a way, they were perfect for getting around town and as long as they did not have to cover long distances. Another benefit why these electric cars were in a way superb is the fact they do not have a crank handle to start the car with (the starter motor was not yet invented by then). There was just one simple button to press very gently and you could start your journey. Making it even more interesting for ladies, as the man (in general) did not find cranking very ladylike. Even if they did have the muscle strength to get the handle around.

Back to the photograph. Can anyone tell us more about the electric car we see? We assume the photograph is taken probably around 1910 / 1912. Please comment below if you can help us complete this story.

The car is a Columbia Mark 68 Victoria of ca 1912, at least that is what the internet tells us. That it is a Columbia seems to be correct based on several details, but officially the Mark 68 was a brougham. Normally different Columbia models did not carry the same number, so I doubt that the Victoria is a Mark 68 too. An independent source however I can't find at the moment. The photo belongs to series of at least 4, showing the ease of charging the car by a woman.
I will not mix in the electric v. gasoline discussion, as it lacks as always new view points. However I can assure you, that in a hundred years our offspring will be transported in a way we never could think of now, but I am certain that it will not be based on gasolene!

To the best of my knowledge, no major innovation in the history of the motorcar depended on state subsidies or any other kind of government support. The fact that the fully electric car can only be sold (in negligible numbers), if it's heavily subsidised (with taxes paid by people who cannot afford one...), and that manufacturers lose thousands of dollars on each car, is a clear indication that it still is far from being a true alternative to the combustion-engined car. Despite the recurring propaganda of major breakthroughs in battery technology over the past 20 years the bottom line has remained fairly the same: fully electric cars involve severely limited mobility for drastically higher costs (and there are strong doubts, as well, as regards their supposed benefits for the environment). Still, I admire electric cars from the early days of motoring for their sheer elegance and the unsophisticated access to driving an automobile they provided...

ELECTRIC CARS?

Great amounts of money are being invested (a lot of it issued as grants from the taxes we have to pay) to improve electric cars. Technical solutions keep coming along; the cars are getting better.

But what will happen in real life when RobinHood no longer confiscates our tax money to subsidize owners of the electric cars?

When a little wife gets home from shopping, in her electric car, with three small children in tow. After parking the all electric car to bring the groceries in, she has to unbuckle the smaller children; get them out of the car; start herding them and the groceries into the house or apartment. On top of this, her bladder is bursting.

After seeing to the separate individual needs of each of the three kids she remembers to get the remainder of the groceries out of the car; frozen foods need urgently to get into the freezer now ! . Then everything else has to be put away.

The next morning she takes the kids to school. As she is driving out from the school, the huge red light comes on behind the speedometer telling her she has five miles of battery left. O damn ! She has almost enough battery to get home. By driving carefully she makes it home.

A full day was planned so she has to call all of her appointments to reschedule. I just don’t want to know what she said to her husband when she angrily called him at work.

This is why I don’t think there will be a great many second time buyers of battery electric cars.

And she still has not connected the cable for recharging.

It is my belief that this second coming of the electric car will be no more successful than the first. History will just repeat its’ self.

But hybrid cars will benefit from many of the innovations that have been developed for the all electric cars.

Finally, somebody has designed a motor generator to fit in the clutch/torque converter housing. Will this be as significant as the 1901 Daimler Phoenix or the first Mini?

As manufacturing machinery and the material pipeline are developed, more cars will become Hybrids.

To me it seems to be a 1907 Williams New Electric Runabout made by The Williams Electric Vehicle Co of Cleveland Ohio. It was advertised as "fool proof" with a safety plug that was impossible to plug in a socket while the controller is carelessly left on circuit....
