The 1000 Mile Trial Mystery (Upd. 1903 Reliability Trial)
A few weeks ago we mentioned the ‘1000 Mile Trial’ in the article about ‘Drive it Day’. This prompted Ian Murray to delve into his amazing collection of early motoring photographs. He found an album of original photographs of the 1000 Mile Trial dating from the year 1900. This one with the policeman and the bicycle(click main pic) is one of the nicest, you can make out the wording on the flag which shows it's the 1000 mile trial. Is there a way to find out who the driver is in this test?

The 1000-Mile Trial photograph is not one from the 1900 event but from the identically named Reliability Trial that took place in 1903, both organised by the Automobile Club of GB. The 1903 Trial started on the 18th September and ran for 8 days, the start-finish point being the Crystal Palace in south London with each day's route visiting a different south-coast town - except on the second Friday when Winchester was the destination.
This does not seem to be one of the 140 or so competing cars but that of one of the many judges that were engaged to oversee the event. It could be an 8hp MMC (Motor Manufacturing Co), but there is not enough detail visible to be certain. There were timed hill climbs on most days and this shot probably shows preparations being made for one such.
Argent Archer was the official photographer for both the 1900 and the 1903 Trials, and after the events he sold albums of pictures of the competing vehicles and associated activities - a few of these albums have survived. His photos also appeared in the both 'The Autocar' and 'The Automotor Journal' along with detailed reports and tables of results.
The police were generally cooperated with the ACGB in helping the event to run smoothly, but they did also set some 'speed traps' and quite a few competitors were caught exceeding the open road speed limit of - 12mph!
