The Australian Diff Mystery (UPDATE II: Ballot or Talbot?)

Craig Gillingham from Australia asks our help in identifying this differential (click main photo for larger picture). He writes: “I've been trying for quite a while, but with no success. I think it's off a French car, because it's got 'G' and 'D' on either hub cap. I remember figuring out that the wheels were either Rudge Whitworth 42's or 52's. There are no other markings apart from what looks like the serial number stamped into the alloy cover. I think it would be from something pre-1914. Also it looks like it had quarter elliptic springs? I thought it was from a large model Amilcar, but an Amilcar expert told me it wasn't. Could it possibly be Minerva? They seemed to be popular in Australia years ago.”
Who can help Craig?

Sorry for the late reply. I'd agree that it would have had cantilever springs, so a Darracq or Talbot is a likely possibility. I've also been told that it would more likely be early vintage rather than veteran. I haven't got access to the diff at the moment, so I can't take any dimensions. I’ll have to search for some early Talbot and Darracq photos to make a comparison.

The axles at the bottom are certainly Morris Cowley, the one on the right a narrow track front axle. The one on the left, a wide track diff. I think the wide track Morris cars were sold in colonial countries; they were a few inches wider than the normal track car.

Thank you for the help so far.

To my ancient knowledge, Ballot only ever used semi-elliptic rear springs... this axle looks like a set-up for cantilever. Darracq/Talbot used cantilever rear springs very like Sunbeams of around 1925 onwards, but there are others....

Hello Craig,
What is the distance between the spring hangers and what is the diameter of the wheels?

Sorry I cannot help with the top axle, but the lower ones are clearly post-1926 Flatnose Morris which did sterling service across Australia in large numbers.

The stamp into the alloy cover on the diff looks like an inverted ship's anchor: I wonder if the axles are for a Ballot?
