The Barcelona to Bucharest Mystery (Upd. 1929 LaSalle)

We sure like these kind of old family snapshots, especially when there's a story in them. But some are more intriguing than others, like this photograph. George Nica bought it in an antique shop in Bucharest, Romania. On the back of the photo is written (in Romanian): "Emil's arrival from Spain on the road to Iasi." Iasi being an important city in north-eastern part of Romania, a few kilometers away from the border to Moldavia. Just imagine what happened here. Driving from Spain to Romania in the 1930s must have been one wonderful trip through pre-war Europe just to visit friends or relatives. We think Emil is the one sitting on the spare wheel. But was he alone or was he accompanied by the lady with the goggles? We think so, as the other four are more leisurely dressed. We think it would be too much to ask if someone knows more about this trip, but perhaps you can help in identifying Emil's car (click main pic for better view)?

I agree, it is a 1929 328 LaSalle, with Fisher body style 8580, being an CCP with RS, disk wheels indicate an exported car from the US.
For what ever reason, many exported Cadillac and LaSalle in those days had the disk wheels when exported to our continent.

Would be interesting to know when the picture was taken.

My guess is a car from somewhere a bit closer to Romania- possibly German- I'll look up my directory later. Many German models then had very American styling- and the wheelbase looks a bit short by American standards.

It happens my housemate is Romanian- and from Podu Ilaiei, which is a small place 15 miles from Iasi. Iasi is a beautiful university town and regional centre. However, in a mere three years my fiend completely wore out a modern Ford Escort on Romanian roads, so he finds my 1933 Talbot a great curiosity- very few cars of that age survive in Romania!

Beautiful car, Beautiful picture with the funny aspect of the goggled woman, squating next to her friends since the runningboard was full. I agree with B. Walsh that the car may be a La Salle '29.
Nash of that period had cowllights. The sparewheel hubcover is also typical.

I won,t mention any fancy European car makes but will have a guess at the car being a twin ignition NASH. Had one myself, long, long ago.

The Barcelona to Bucharest mystery car could be a 1929 LaSalle convertible coupe. A similar car is at http://www.rmauctions.com/FeatureCars.cfm?SaleCode=SJ12&CarID=r122&fc=0# The obvious points that look correct are the two-bar bumpers, hood mechanism, door hinges, side light on the guard, no rear light on the right hand side and possibly even the belt-line moulding on the door. Even the disc wheels were available as an option from the factory.
