You are looking at two Vauxhalls 30-98 (UPDATEs: lots of owners!)

Report by Carrick Watson: a 30-98 with a very involved history in Scotland and England. The body had a racing number painted on the side when we first got it. HAA383 - Vauxhall 30-98 Year 1924. Bought in bits after lying in a field in Scotland 1950's, - nobody wanted them then. Rebuilt and used for many happy outings. Very reliable, and was used as these cars should be used - to go everywhere as fast as possible. Amazing how people got out of your way very quickly when they saw how fast this very large car came up behind them – with the front wheels doing an amazing dance. Main problem was trying to STOP. You soon learned to think a very long way up the road to get ready for it to happen. I drove this car a very great deal, complete with family. We never did have a hood on it, if it rained, the gang in the back just got tucked up under the tonneau cover. The family all have great memories of outings in the 30-98, no one ever complained, but we did get wet... They still remember these journeys. J. C. Sword from Kilmaurs gave us a loan of his own 30-98 to give us a guide where everything went, when we started to put it back together. The first time I ever drove a centre loud pedal car was when I had to collect his car from Ayrshire and drive it back through Glasgow City centre, - complete with Tram lines then ! Makes you learn very fast... The Sword Collection of cars at that time was immense, I had to be dragged away. I understand that HAA383 has now been converted into 2 Cars !, - but that must be another story !!..... hopefully someone will fill in the new details.

Fascinating-I purchase HAA 383 a couple of years ago from Mike via Martin Chisholm Cars a couple of years ago and had some good trips with it. Unfortunately the cylinder head started leaking badly a few months ago and it took a long time to track down a good replacement sourced in Australia. (By the way, this chap is making new ones in alloy). Alistair Templeton is sorting it out at this moment! We moved back from deepest Devon (too far away from it all) and the car will reside in Haslemere, Surrey as soon as it is fixed where new adventures will prevail.
In passingg, I just purchased a 1912 Minerva 14hp DD from the Bonhams sale the other day-does anyone know who may have info on this rather delightful vehicle?

When I purchased this delightful car from David Barker I idly Googled the registration number into the computer and it revealed the photograph you showed together with the name Carrick Watson. Further research put me in direct touch with Carrick Watson who sent me some more pictures which should still be in the car's history file to this day. He also sent me a photocopy of the cars original handbook with some handwritten comments by Alan Southon in the margins. I also later came across Alan Southon's files when we purchased the remaining Weber carburettor stock from Peter Whenman and there was a page dedicated to the set up OE 232 when in Southon's ownership. A copy of this is also in the file.

As I understand it this car was built up by Alan Southon of Phegre Engineering from parts including in the sale of Phoenix Green Garage, the garage and pub The Phoenix where the VSCC was created back in the 30's by Tim Carson, et al who were also great enthusiasts for the 30-98. The car was registered by Alan Southon in 1949 in Portsmouth, hence the HAA registration number. I also had photos of the car at the Brighton Speed Trials with Alan which should also still be in the file. Then at some time it was passed on and ended up in Scotland Some time later it was in Cumbria and the parts involved in its original construction by Southon turned out to be quite interesting. The body was off OE 101, the ex Clive Windsor Richards car, the engine was OE 232 and the chassis OE 304. The body was reunited with OE 101 and in return one new chassis and new body changed hands. OE 304 was built with the new body and and OD engine with an OE head and is now alive and well and a bit yellow in Oxfordshire. The new chassis was built up, as David Barker says, with engine OE232, a new chassis and Peppercorn body and carried the identity of of HAA 383 and that is how it remains to this day. The current owner of OE 304 used to keep asking me for his engine back....

Quite true, I bought one of the 'clones' way back from the widow of the man who was going to complete the car. I got a new replica chassis and a new Peppercorn body and most of the original mechanical parts apart from the fact that the cylinder block was new,the front axle was from a Peugot and the back axle was 23/60 not 30/98, However it did make up into a superb car with better brakes than any other 30/98 and never a trace of the dreaded axle tramp! We used it a lot in VSCC Sprints, hill-climbs and rallies and a couple of Ulster VCC events too, winning a few pots along the way. Attached to a separate E Mail is a picture of us competing in the Fluella Pass hill-climb near Davos in 2000. I sold the car to Mike Hallowes the next year and I believe he has now sold it and it resides in Cornwall.
Wonderful car, another one that I shouldn't have sold!

Very interesting to read about the vauxhall 30-98. I've just bought a 30-98 which was originally registered in East Lothian, Scotland and will soon return to Scotland. Tonight I recieved a photograph of the very 30-98 Carrick Watson refers to. It was lot number 40 in the 2nd Sword Sale, 12th March 1965. It old for £2360. The following lot was an 8 Ltr Bentley registration GP 4258 which sold for £1520. Even then the 30-98 was recognised for what it is!
