Four farmer’s daughters dressed in the traditional costume of their village, called Hoek, lies in a remote part of The Netherlands, called Zeeuws Vlaanderen (part of the province of Zeeland close to the Belgian border). We think the girl’s mode of transport is a 1901 FN, but you may correct us if we have it wrong. Particularly interesting for Belgian and Dutch readers are the two licence plates: the one on the front of the FN has the Belgian number 228, which is a black serial number on white porcelain plates with a semi-circular projection above with “Belgique” and the royal crest. But on the dashboard we also find a local number Z-203 that was issued in Zeeland. We find this strange as The Netherlands already had a national licensing system which was introduced in 1898. Perhaps at that time there were no national roads in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen? (photo courtesy Jan Platteeuw)
