The Gustav Mena House Mystery (UPDATEs: Daimler!)

Here we see a not so very clear photo of a (US-built?) car with King Gustav of Sweden leaving The Mena House near Cairo, Egypt. "I came across this photo of a car that probably belonged or was lent to King Gustav during his stay in Egypt in the 30's. King Gustav is shown in the photo departing from The Mena House which is now The Mena House Oberoi Hotel. Can you kindly help me identify the vehicle shown in the photo?" Mahmoud Ezzeldin Contact Us

Lots of updates came in from Grant Taylor, Stuart Penketh, John Kent, Lars-Göran Lindgren, Anders Svenfelt, Ed Fallon, Toby Ballard and John Hearne all claiming it to be a Daimler.
Stuart: “You can just see part of the steering wheel. RHD, therefore would be a British car - Looks like a 1928/29 Daimler double six model 50 7P limousine, typically used for royalty.”
Ed: “Not a Model 50 because no strip dividing the radiator vertically.”
Anders: “Gustaf V's son, the crown-prince, got a Daimler drophead in wedding present when he married the anglicized Louise Mountbatten in 1923. That car still exists.”
Toby: “The Mena House was built and owned by Hugh Locke-King the owner of Brooklands. If you go to the Mena House you can see pictures all over the walls of the Locke-King family at the Hotel.”

Gentlemen, it is correct that the Double Six 50 initially had no dividing strip on the radiator, but the Double Six 30 had from the beginning. The picture nether the less shows a 35HP Limousine with coachwork from the Daimler factory and not a Double Six 50 because the latter one had a larger more upright radiator what can be judged by the position of the headlights. HM King Fouad I of Egypt was supplied a 35HP model in 1931 which - except the colourscheme applied - looked pretty much the same.

In fact it is a Daimler Double Six 50 or even a 30HP. The Double sixes were presented in 1927 and untill 1929 they dont have the grille diveded.

This large Daimler lacks the centre bar to the grill so is not a 'double six'. It is almost certainly a 35/120 of about 1929, fitted with standard Daimler coachwork- this style of split screen was typical of their designs. This was a 'big six' of 5764cc, and the complete car cost about £1,300, whereas the 'double six' cost £1,900 for the chassis alone- about the same as a Rolls Royce Phantom. The 35 was popular and was made from 1924 until 1932. One was given to Sir Winston Chircuill as a gift from his friends. I wish I had such friends!
