The Haynes Horstmann Case. (UPDATE)

The second 'n' in Horstmann was dropped after WW1 . Ced Pearce added: "The dropping of the second N has echoes in the British Royal Family changing their surname from Battenberg to Mountbatten for similar reasons...
EARLIER TEXT: The Haynes Museum in Somerset (UK) has recently purchased one of the few remaining Horstmann cars, which were built in Bath between 1914 and 1929. The Museum believes that only six of this make survive and that their 1915 model is the second oldest of those survivors. It came to them through a dealer(editor: a Horstman(n) dealer???) and sadly they know little of its history. Its registration number is LM 5489. The Horstmann is unusual in that the front of the crankcase forms the front part of the chassis, the gearbox is in the rear axle and a screw device attached to the propeller shaft, which is actuated by a pedal, starts the engine. Contact Curator Mike Penn on 0044(0)1963 440804 or write to Michael Ware. Did you visit his British Motor Museums site lately? (photo courtesy www.MotorMuseums.com)
