The International Autojumble was only a national one, but it was certainly a good show

Covid-19 and Brexit, the topics most people were asking us about at the International Autojumble last week. Both had a big impact on the show, which is traditionally held the first weekend of September in the garden of the Beaulieu National Motor Museum.

'Beaulieu', as we call it, has always been a gathering of classic car enthusiasts from all over the world: Americans, Germans, French, Hungarians, Dutch, Belgium etc. but this year it was not so international. The PreWarCar.com & PostWarClassic.com team (from The Netherlands) had to do several PCR tests, could not easily bring car parts over and were therefore only one of five(!) non-British exhibitors. The locals even thanked us for coming over but we'd like to thank them too because, although we had to make a bit of an efforts, we can honestly say it was all worth it!

Only 2 fields

Instead of the normal three fields, the entire Yellow Field was closed and the other fields only had open stands, but that didn't bother the visitors, who strolled around the many stands that were selling spares and great ‘junk’. The weather was absolutely perfect and both Friday and Saturday were very busy. We spoke to many old friends and made several new ones. Most of you have not changed in two years! Sunday was a little quieter, even though Bonhams held their MPH Motorcar auction.

Next year?

The border restrictions and Covid will certainly be a challenge for the future of the International Autojumble. We heard several people say that the event reminded them of how it had been 10 to 15 years ago, and in a good way. However, others said this will be their last year. Although it was less international than before, we certainly enjoyed ourselves. We would love to hear what British and overseas visitors and participants thought about this year's event. Will we see you again next year? And if not, what can the Beaulieu organisation do to make it more attractive for you?

We did a mix of buying as well as selling this year. Instead of racing around 3 fields in search of that elusive bargain, we strolled round the 2 fields more leisurely and had time enough to rummage in the boxes. So we didn't really miss the 3rd field this year. We will adapt both our sales as well as buying stategies as the event evolves. I agree with Philip Cordery's comment about the cost of the stalls for future years. It must have cost less to set up this year's event, but the price of tickets still went up from 2019 rates. We are at the cusp of the event folding for good, so Beaulieu Administrators must reduce their rates to prevent killing off the goose that laid the golden egg.

It's the first time since 1991 I've missed the Beaulieu autojumble, constrained by the covid's strict rules in France & UK to travel.
I think Beaulieu is a great event and I hope to go next year twice, from the spring event and the big one in september!!!
Hurry up!

The organisers can start by not Locking 7 out of 8 toilets at 5pm, there are still Hundreds on site, in need of facilities, secondly get a decent group who actually can perform , & not spend 2 hours tuning up, Give all 2021 exhibitors a discretionary rate for next years jumble, after all we turned up after travelling hundreds of miles with no advance knowledge that it would be busy or otherwise, a big Gamble.

We always combined the International Autojumble with a holiday in Devon or Dorset. In September 2019 I said goodbye to many exhibitors. This is the last International Autojumble for me. There was always the same answer: Nothing will change, it will always be Beaulieu. At that time, there was only the Brexit. The virus and its consequences were still far away.
In Europe there are plenty of other opportunities to meet the classic car community. There are exhibitions in Paris, Mannheim, Padua, Reims, Lyon, Erfurt, Verona, Stuttgart, Essen, etc. There are also young enthusiasts who want to establish something new, like Waregem. I spent a wonderful "Prewar" day there. I think Beaulieu is a thing of the past. It will never be the same again.
