The Kalgoorlie Mystery (update: six cylinder 50 HP Darracq)

Imagine being about four years old and already your father allowed you to drive the family car! Future PreWarCar fans in the making! Unfortunately for us this particular fan will be more than 110 years old as this picture was taken around 1909 in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. Back then Kalgoorlie was a booming gold town where many made their fortune (and many did not!). In a place like that exotic cars like this one were not uncommon. However this magnificent automobile has us stumped as we have no idea what it is (Click main pic for a better view). Perhaps you, the PreWarCar audience can help solve this mystery? Tell us your thoughts!

UPDATE II : see car in todays condition!

UPDATE: read about the six cylinder Darracq's  The Early Motor of September 2012

Unfortunately I never owned a 1907 6-cylinder Darracq (nor any other vehicle of that age, by the way), so I cannot tell out of experience. However what 'worries' me most is the presence of the louvres and the low position of the grip on the side of the bonnet. All images of 6 cylinder Darracq models I come across lack the louvres and have the grip halfway the bonnet. Gladiator had louvres similar to this car and besides the upper part of the radiator resembled the Darracq (at least in this period). Moreover from this viewing angle the Gladiator emblem can easily mistaken for a Darracq emblem. So, to make things easier, if similar cars still exist, photos of these could bring the answer. I can't find any, but maybe someone else can?

I'm certainly not an authority on vehicles of this type, but I'm convinced that it's a C1909 Darracq Double Phaeton. research shows that the marque produced a 458ci 6 cylinder model with a 4 speed transmission. The radiator certainly appears to be painted and the badge round. I initially thought it might've been a Star 40hp. Australia was a popular market for this manufacturer. The bonnet seems too high for a Star though which also had a nickel plated radiator shell. I'd say no to Star and certainly no to Napier.

Would it be possible for PWC to blow up the image so we can perhaps see more of the radiator badge?

The big 4 and 6 cylinder Darracqs had this type of radiator. Several of them came to New Zealand where they served as transport in the more rugged back country areas. At least two are still here.

I think it may well be a Wolverhampton Star and possibly a 15hp (19.6hp RAC). The radiator looks like that on a Star. I can't quite make out the badge at the top of the radiator but could it be a 6 pointed star? Certainly the wire wheels look correct for a Star and so does the handbrake.

Hmmm... I'm not convinced it's any of the suggestions so far. Paul Hicks is surely familiar with the Darracq if he owned one, but the radiator has straight shoulders, whereas the Darracq is usually curved, and the radiator core does not extend so far up towards the header tank on the Darracq. Napier radiators had tall filler cap pillars, so I don't think it's a Napier. The radiator shape matches both Gladiator and Star quite well, but I cannot find either make with such a tall bonnet line. But I cannot offer a better solution...

Having owned the car before him I would agree with Paul Hicks. I too think it is a Darracq. The radiator is the giveaway. The filler neck is nowhere tall enough for a Napier.

I don't think it is a Napier as it does not have a very tall filler on the radiator.

It could be that we see a rare British-made 6 cylinder Gladiator of 1908 or 1909.
