The Ladies make this Motorette priceless!

On the 7th of March 2019, Bonhams sold this 1901 De Dion Bouton Motorette during their Amelia Island Auction. This single cylinder car was for formerly owned by Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance Founding Chairman Alton Walker. It has been the cover car for Antique Automobile Club of America and Horseless Carriage Club of America publications. And became 2nd in its class during the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. Pretty impressive don`t you think?

What is even more impressive is the price it went for… Bonhams did an extraordinary job selling this 5HP 'vis-à-vis' for the stunning amount of US$ 162,400 (€ 143,678)! Who said that pre-wars are not loved anymore!?

The car is wonderfully restored, has an extensively documented history and is eligible for the famed British London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. But would you pay this amount for the car? Is it really worth US$ 162,400?

But it must be these wonderful ladies that make this Motorette priceless!

This little car was an absolute delight, beautifully restored and running very nicely. I know the restorer, a very knowledgeable early car guy, and the car was done to a very high standard. I would love to have bought it, but it went a bit beyond me.
However, on the day of the sale, this car was really worth $162,400, as shown by the price one individual was willing to pay. It's not really possible to say what a car like this, or many others, is worth. The only thing you can do is chose a number that satisfies you and bid.
