The Summer of 1909 Mystery (Upd. 1908 Vulcan)

At first John Wilson wrote to us that these people posing during the summer of 1909 are his wife’s great great grandparents and their children and that her great grandmother may have taken the photo as she is not present. But then he got kicked for getting the generations wrong: it’s the great grandparents and possibly granny who took the photo! Anyway the story goes that the husband has not got a good reputation as after divorce, almost unheard of in those days, he vanished from view in Switzerland; his wife lived on to be over 100! One of the boys was killed in the Great War. On the back of the photo is written: “Hall Garth, our first car, LB 9653”, which is a London registration number. And what looks like an early AA badge is clamped to the top of the radiator. The car has Dunlop tyres, but otherwise there are no signs of any names on radiator or on the small hexagonal hubs. John would very much like to know the make of the car and hopes we can help.
(Editor: we were intrigued by the wings on the school boy’s cap. Who can tell us what that is?)

I don't know, if this project is still on. Anyway, the car is a Vulcan of around 1908.

This one is difficult. Possibly a small Clement Talbot, though that could be wrong. There was quite a variety of both English and French built 'Clements' sold in Britain during that period. I did think maybe it was an early Austin, but Austin radiatior surrounds above the matrix were curved, not horizontal as here. At that time, the radiator header tanks of most cars rose above the bonnet (hood) level, and the tidy, flush 'line' achieved here may provide a clue. Certainly this is a hansom little car in every way.
