Those daring young men in their flying machines

At the dawn of the previous century road safety had become a serious issue, although many cartoonists tried to make fun of the dangers that the new-fangled contraption presented. Even the early automobilist made light work of the risks for the unwary pedestrian, like this group in the (presumably) 2-cylinder 1904 Darracq. But a later definition of the 'car' as "an ingenious device for public slaughter" is taking things a bit too far, we think.

By the late 1930's there were 3,500 casualties on Britains roads- about the same as today- but then there were 1.7 million road vehicles and now about 28 million. So you were 16 times as likely to become a casualty!. One look at the interior of my 1933 Talbot - full of wood and metal- tells you why. The only 'crumple zones' were the intrepid humans inside! In the early 20th century British winters were quite severe with plenty of snow and thick fogs, whilst the incredibly narrow roads were dangerous even though relatively empty.
