Two perspectives on the recent Duesenberg tragedy (Update)

Various readers pointed us to tragic accident in which a modern car crashed into a newly restored Duesenberg resulting in deadly victims. Visitor Stephan Aderca writes: "I wish to draw your attention to a headline that made the front page of Yahoo News, and which could have been plucked right out of my worst nightmare. It read: "Deadly Crash Spotlights Classic-Car Safety". Unfortunately, occupants of a recently restored Duesenberg have fallen victim to a reckless modern car (Volvo) driver, who burned a traffic signal, crashed into the Duesie and took three lives. But reading the article, you'd think it was all the Duesenberg's fault. The author, Olivia Munoz from Associated Press, spends most of the article rambling about how pre-war cars lack modern gadgets like safety belts and airbags. And the headline, of course, only suggests one thing, which is that "old cars are dangerous and must be banned". Given the prominence given to this tragic event and the type of headline, one would think Duesenbergs and other fine old cars are the primary cause of deaths on American roads today. I think the publicity given to this event is worrying. I wrote a strongly worded to AP ([email protected]) and would encourage other readers to do the same.
Update: Dennis Murphy reports ‘Most of the coverage around the US regrettably picked up the distorted AP story, but there were a few who got the point, f.i. Rick Mills, The Executive editor of the Morning Sun in Mt Pleasant MI had a different opinion.’ Click here for his story.
