UPDATE II: Jaap 'Bugatti' Horst is of course totally right when he amends that Bugatti only was one of the designers of this De Dietrich. Often the car is referred to as the Type 5 Bugatti. The replica is commissioned by De Dietrich (still alive!), not by Molsheim.
UPDATE I: Michael Ulrich's book is now out:
'Paris-Madrid . The Race Bugatti Missed'
EARLIER: When you were at Rétromobile there was little chance to miss this very special project. A reconstruction of the 'Bugatti' that was intended to participate in the 1903 Paris - Madrid. Due to regulations that only took into account bore and not stroke X-treme longstroke machines were being developed ( <<< correction by Michael Ulrich:"In 1903 racing classes
were calculateded by maximum weight. Maximum engine capacity (also
cylinder area) was introduced much later, I think in 1908."
. Like this 2 cylinder 12,8 litre that was inscribed by Ettore Bugatti & Matthis but eventually was denied access to the dramatic race (ddavid.com). Quite a challenge to reconstruct the monster based only on some sketches and old photos (see seen at the Bugatti clubstand ). Now don't take out paper-thin knowledge on the issue for granted. Today - March 3 - a new book on "Paris-Madrid. The Race Bugatti Missed." will be presented in Berlin. Probably the only book about Bugatti that was still missing. That at least was the motivation of sculptor/writer/artist Michael Ulrich. Yes, you may remember his name, as he is the artist who designed and made the 2003 Pebble Beach Award.
