Vassal's Ford on the road again !

We tend to think the East has no car racing past. Wrong, it's just a long time ago we heard from them! Bogdan Coconoiu of the Romanian Retromobil Club reports: "Yesterday I found a Ford 3 Window Coupe Sport V8 (1933). The car is in a bad condition but very important in Romania because the first owner was Alexa de Vassal, the copilot of Petre Cristea in Monte Carlo Rally ’38. Cristea won in ’36 and also in '37 (see superb photo of special stage at Monte Carlo harbour front) but had a penalty -probably due to uncovered double rear wheels- and went down to the 7 th place. Mr.de Vassal will be 93 years old in April 2003 and is an honorary member of the RRC. The car has some parts from the early rally cars : ventilated front wheel brakes and a special double barrel Weber. I’m so proud because these parts come from the car which won on Monte Carlo in ’36, as Mr. De Vassal told me. I haven’t reason to doubt him. (photos by and from collection of Bogdan ; see his club-page about the important Romanian drivers ).
