Press release
Members of the Veteran Car Club dusted down their cars for a tour of the Kent countryside for a season-closing event on Thursday, September 19th. The Amble in the Marsh, organised by the South-East Centre, took place around the lanes of Romney Marsh, an unspoilt area of coastal wetland home to a cluster of tiny, picturesque villages.
Participants gathered for breakfast at the early 18th-century Star Inn in St. Mary-in-the-Marsh, as pretty a village as any of them, and then embarked on a 25-mile drive to enjoy the local scenery. The halfway tea break generated considerable interest when a club member welcomed drivers to his private Model T Ford collection and automobilia museum, and after that the cars were once again on the road, navigating their way through villages such as Appledore and Old Romney, and a landscape quite reminiscent of Holland, characterised by flat fields fragmented by dykes. On reaching the Star Inn once more, participants could swap notes over their complementary ploughman's lunch.
Various veteran and Edwardian motor cars took part, plus a vintage Rolls-Royce and an Edwardian bicycle. Participants were not just confined to the south-east—a couple of drivers travelled from Lincolnshire and Norfolk before heading off to take part in the South-West Centre's Snail Trail held over the weekend. One of the cars, a 1914 Panhard X19, travelled all the way from Bexhill to Romney Marsh and back under its own power, while the oldest participant was a 1903 Darracq. It was especially gratifying to welcome a new member attending his first event with his 1912 Studebaker. He bought the Studebaker 18 years ago and had to fully restore it—it was a pleasure to see it at a club gathering.
After the winter hiatus, members will now be looking forward to the South-East Centre's Spring Opener in April.
