The Dutch are used to it as they are well-known for their ability to manage water. Most famous are the Delta-works, but also the Noordoostpolder is a magnificent example of how to create land. Lelystad is one of the new towns, 4.8 metres below sea level and inhabited since 1967. On Sunday June 15 Lelystad’s town centre provides the setting for an impressive show of 400 (!) vintage and classic cars. There’s a special area for pre-war cars, the Hupmobile -celebrating its 100th birthday- will be one of the highlights. Another special display features the French marque La Licorne. And so on, and on. The event -the Dutch call it Nationale Oldtimerdag- is already in its 24th year and apart from being below sea level it has one other unique feature: it’s free for all, participants and spectators alike. Last year it rained a bit, but for this year the organizers have promised us glorious sunshine! (RB)
