Weird Wednesday: Heavy! (Update IV:more history)

The DoX Dornier was a legendary flying boat made in 1929. However, what we see here is not the actual airplane, it’s a replica in scale 1:10! The original Do X was constructed as a high-wing monoplane flying boat with twelve radial piston engines, which were mounted in tandem on the wing. The aircraft was designed for 159 passengers and 10 crew members with the cockpit located in a deck above the passenger cabin. This model has a wingspan of five meters and weighs seventy (70!) kilogrammes. The builder invested eight years of construction and detailing in the model. But what’s more… it’s airworthy! Although after its maiden flight the owner has not dared to launch the model again and kept it on the ground.

A good question would be what happened to the two DO-X planes which were delivered to Italy ?

Story of Dr. Claudius Dornier’s Do X is one of the most entertaining in aviation history.
In its day it was the largest plane in the world. On it’s first passenger flight October 21, 1929 the plane took off carrying 169 people (breaking the world record for the number of people aboard a flight, a record that would remain unsurpassed for 20 years) consisting of 150 passengers, 10 crew and 9 stowaways (how the 9 stowaways got on board I have not a clue!). And during its stay in New York City from August 27, 1931 to May 21, 1932, (yes all most nine months) that it was quiet popular with the locals and one of the reasons for that was the bar on board in dry, prohibition, New York.
There is more on this plane than I have time to post!

WOW ! ! ! ! that is just incredible, it would be nice to see more of it. Especially it's maiden flight.....And I wouldn't mind a set of plans, especially with the rising cost of the old cars!
