What is it? #165 (UPDATE)

UPDATE by owner of the sketch:"It does not depict any actual race but it was one of the artist's famous Esquire paintings. This drawing was a preliminary drawing for part of the painting in which this rear entrance 1905 touring car was pulling a famous US driving ace his American made race car through a town with a banner above on the street advertising the country fair and auto races with the towns people looking on. It was one of eight commissioned by Esquire and the whole painting was exhibited at Detroit's Golden Jubilee Celebration in 1946."
EARLIER TEXT: It is a preliminary sketch of spectators of an important race 100 years ago. Not only the race, nor the winner of this race is famous. Also the artist who made this and countless very vivid images of the early auto races. In fact the final artworks which followed to this sketch appeared in Esquire and later in a book by the artist himself. OK, that was it! Who is the artist? Which race was attended by these people? Who won the race? In which car? Which car is depicted here? Take your chance and show your knowledge in 100 words. Only the best answer will win the infamous Roadmap/PreWarCar gillet.
