What is it? Quiz #367

This is a rare tourer made in the USA sporting a most intriguing aftermarket radiator monkey mascot. This make of car was made in small numbers near to a location visited by many of our readers. Despite the low total production of the make was small, this specific car made it to Norway. Not the first to use V8 engines, but possibly the only marque to offer V8 engines alone. Now we may have given too many hints already, yet the next step will be to name the correct year and type of the specific tourer shown here. Gambling is allowed, but your score is better when you can argue why your guess is best.

This time, it was very easy!
We do have the same picture on our website www.massingnickel.se
(Http://www.massingnickel.se/orgdaniels.html)
The car is of course a Daniels.
This text we have on display (with Google translate: registered in Norway, C-78, Daniels Model A Touring 1916. Total production in 2000 Daniels between 1916 and 1924. Everybody had V8 engines, first they used engines purchased from Herschell-Spillman before 1919, produced its own engine. Get Daniels is believed to have come to the Nordic countries, but there are actually two extant, one in Sweden and one in Norway. Gunnar Geijer, Ystad, in Brass & Nickel owns a car from 1916 as recorded in Jämtland it May 4, 1921 at number Z570., it is possible that it is this C-78 that wandered across the border.

And unusual for building their own V8 engines after 1919. It's the Daniels, from Reading, Pennsylvania, of course, probably Model D.

It’s a 1917 Daniels ”Model A ” tourer, also named as just ”Daniels Eight”. The car has a 7 seater tourer coachwork, made by Keystone Vehicle coachwork. Equipped with a 33.8 h.p. Herchell-Spillman V-8 engine. This particular car C-78 was owned by E. Th. Lindboe. In 1921 there were 13 Daniels cars in Norway. There still in one in Norway at Norsk Teknisk Museum, could be the same car.

I think (guess) that the car is a Daniels Eight from about 1920. As far as I can ascertain the company only made V8 cars. Founded in 1915 by former GM and Oakland President George Emory Daniels in Reading, Pennsylvania, USA. The first cars used an engine from fairground ride manufacturers Herschell Spillman; after 1919 their own engine design was used. Daniels produced their high quality, expensive and powerful cars until 1923 when the company was in receivership. The companies assets were bought by the Leverne Motor Company of Philadelphia who in 1924 built small number of Daniels cars.

If the car is a Daniels and I am declared the winner please do not send me a T-shirt as I am already the proud owner/wearer of one. Instead I will bask in the glory.

Warm regards from England

Neil

It is a Daniels. Looks 1917/18.The Daniels Motor Company was started in 1916 by George E. Daniels & his business partner Neff Parish in Reading Pennsylvania. The engine is a Herschell-Spillman of 331 Cu inch V8 L head of 75hp. Daniels bought the Keystone Body Company to body his cars. Therefore the body would be Keystone. I do not know the title they named the body BUT I am sure it wasn't Cops!!! The Daniels was in the idiom of the pre WW1 Locomobiles & thus a bit of a dinosaur in the 20's.In 1918 Hershell-Spillman stopped producing their engine so Daniels now used another V8 L head engine made by Light Manufacturing Company of Pottstown, Pennsylvania. It was 404 Cu in.& produced 94hp.Daniels were priced from $4500 - $9500. Exy for 1916.The closed version weighed in excess of 3.5 tons! The radiator shells were 100% pewter! Daniels & Parish split around 1923. George Daniels though not often lauded in automotive history writings was associated with many of the early movers & shakers of the industry. For example---when Billy Durant in 1908 was doing one of his corporate maneuvers Daniels was appointed President of the Incorporators of General Motors. Daniels was associated with Charlie Nash, Dallas Dort, Henry Leland, Edsel Ford, Robert Hupp, Russell Gardner, Gaston Chevrolet, Charles King, Benjamin Briscoe, etc. etc.. So he was a high flyer. There are thought to be only about 6 Daniels surviving. The company survived until 1924.
I think I am a 2 or 3 times winner --Who knows.

Looks like a Daniels, built in Reading, Pennsylvania between 1916 and 1924. All Daniels (Model A, B, C, D) used a Herschell Spillman V-8 rated at 34 horsepower, but actual output was substantially higher. I believe the vehicle pictured is a 1916 because of the small straight windshield. Later cars were angled back.
Thanks for all your work! Chris Paulsen, McPherson, Kansas, USA, jury member.

This is a Daniels, manufactured in Reading, Pennsylvania. Since the style of mudguard/fender/wing had gone by 1918, this must be a 1916 Model A or 1917 Model B with a 331-cubic inch Herschell-Spillman V8 engine. The body style, with high sides, deep doors and a solid rear cowl suggests that it is what Daniels called a 5-passenger Victoria, built by the Keystone Vehicle Co.

This must be a Daniels. The Daniels Motor Car Company was founded by George Daniels (and he was NOT a brother of Jack Daniel’s!).
Production of Daniels cars started in 1916 in Pennsylvania. This seems to be a early one, probably 1917 or very early 1918.
As it is a pre 1919 car, and pre Model D car, it has to have a Herschell-Spillman engine and not the Daniels –made engine.
It was a well built car - but by 1924 the adventure ended.

I have a old and better photo of a similar car – but your comment-box do not allow photos to be enclosed…
I have never won anything from you at any time, ever!!

Car is a circa 1920 Model D-7 Daniels touring. George Daniels owned the company, making very expensive ($3000-7000) cars to customer order. He only offered a V-8 engine, 404 cubic inch, 80 horsepower. Bodies were custom built by Fleetwood Metal Body, located in Fleetwood, Pennsylvania, only 12 miles away from the Daniels factory in Reading, Pennsylvania (and near Hershey of course!)

best wishes David Coco Winchester Va.

Maybe I am disqualified in principle - The car is a Daniels of 1917. The car belonged to a well-known family in Oslo (I forget the name). It was given to the Technical museum in Oslo and they first gave it a cosmetic restortation. In 1975-76 my brother and I with some friends rebuilt the mechanicals, and were allowed to use the car. It is a heavy beast to drive in traffic, better on the open road, but the high weight combined with the two-wheel brakes gave us some scary moments. The petrol consumption of more than 30 l/100 km - the ca 6,5 -litre Herschell-Spillman engine has double ignition by Atwater-Kent distributor and magneto. The front axle is by Timken. The car is displayed in the museum in Oslo.

Good morning !

Little problem : this morning, looking to my favorite prewar website on my e-phone I saw the following informations with same picture of quiz 367 : "Quiz?1916 or early 1917 Daniels Eight. This photo was taken in Norway, nothing more is known, 1916 or early 1914 Daniels Eight, photo send to us by Gunnar Geijer."
Is the first of April always of actuality or a problem of ignition delay ?

Good week-end !

This appears to be a 1916 Daniels Series A seven passenger touring. The Herschell-Spillman V8 engined Daniels Series A differed from the series B only slightly, by the shape of the windshield and the addition of small cowl lights on the Series B. The depth of the rear compartment appears to indicate that this is a 7-Pass. touring model.

Hi folks,

unfortunately I could read the solution by hazard in a certain configuration of the picture on my tablet, nevertheless some more informations:

Daniels A, narrow-angle V8, built from 1916 until 1918, not a high end car, but for the quite wealthy...built by George E.Daniel in Reading, Penn. Daniels finished with the type D in 1920, overall having built around 1200 cars. To small to survive...

Best regards from the Nahe valley in the Mild West

I can tell the car is a Daniels, except I'm unsure what year or model. Anything after 21 can be ruled out as the guards have a rolled edge after this date, and different headlamps. 1919 have a headlamp with a square headlamp rim, so not that year. 1916 had different wire wheels, not center lock like this one. That leaves 17-18-20. This car has More-Lite headlamp lenses, except I think they were used during those years as well. I'll have a guess at a 1920 model C touring, as that body style is similar to the 1921 Victoria Cabriolet.

Daniels Eight 4-seater Touring from about 1917. Daniels cars were built in Reading, Pennsylvania. Their luxury, custom bodies were built on a 127" wheelbase, across the street from the chassis factory. Engines (404 cubic inch, 84-degree V8s) were supplied by Herschell-Spillman.
The Daniels car took its name from George Daniels, who had been the first president of General Motors - albeit for just one month. He had also been general manager of Oakland. In late 1922, Daniels fell out with his main partner, Neff Parish, and the company was subsequently declared bankrupt. Daniels later become general manager of Locomobile.
