It's very old and it's French.  The two cylinder has an extraordinary design. The manufacturer(s) are from an engineering family. They never made large numbers of cars, yet they were all impressive or very impressive.

This is an Amedee Bollée, Junior, 2.3 litre twin cylinder engine with Panhard-type gearbox. It ran in the 1896 Paris-Marseille-Paris race. Air-cooled gas engine produced 6 h.p.It completed only the first stage of the race to Auxerre and was the only race entry with a steering wheel rather than a tiller. G.Dauplay built automobile bodies at 8, Rue de Cirque in LeMans.

I do know that Peugeot made a lot of these 'double phaeton' cars around the turn of the century, but they made a lot of cars so it can't be a Peugeot. There's a famous light blue Gardener Serpollet with similar bodystyle, but the nose is slightly different. I've seen another car very similar to this one in the museum of compiegne in France, but I can't remember the name of the manifacturer. However, I know absolutely nothing about who built this body.

Quiz # 419

This car most likely is an Amédée Bollée fils, and as it is chain-driven it ought to be a type D – introduced in 1900. The 10HP car featured a particularly strong chassis and a patented non-reversible steering system. It was powered by a two-cylinder engine with variable exhaust valve lift. A number of bodies were supplied by local coachbuilder Gaston Dauplay (8 rue du Cirque, Le Mans), better known for horse-drawn carriages and harnesses.

Best regards,

Stefan Ittner

I think it's a Gobron-Brillié. A lot of years ago, I had the pleasure to work on the same model : a Nagant (a Gobron-Brillié made in Belgium)owned by the Vercruysse family. The engine has 2 vertical cylinders and 4 pistons : 2 pistons going together up when the 2 others are going together down. The 2 upper pistons (thus working head down)are connected to the crankshaft by a kind of connecting rods working on the engine's sides. The engine is under the rear seat with the gearbox in front, under the floor.I can say this engine is impressivily powerful !
