What is it? Quiz # 426

This must be one of the very first 'Motor Homes' pictured on a 'black saturday': the predictable scenario every year with roads packed with cars on a hot Saturday in July or August trying to reach their holiday destination in time! Queus everywhere and no way to escape. Trying to keep up the good spirit with singing, candies, handies and the occasional ice-cream … How different was the situation more than 100 years ago. Look at this cheerful family having reached their destination in Spain: no sign of travel stress at all after a long trip from Posen in Germany (nowadays Poznan in Poland). It must be said that this early mobile home (not the very first, that is another story!) was taking part in an organised trip in the style of the Monte Carlo rallye, with participants driving from cities all over Europe to the same town in the North of Spain. The make of the car in the photo was widely established among aviators and was well-known for its exuberant bodies. So please tell us the make, year and type of the car and if possible also about Posen-San Sebastian, in which it took part. Yet to make a chance winning the infamous PreWarCar T-shirt and before posting your answer under 'comments' be sure to read The Rules under Read More.

This 1912 Gregoire was driven by Italian born racecar driver Jean Poporato to victory in the San Sebastian Rallye, beating the 2nd place Hispano-Suiza and 3rd place Berliet. The vehicle, titled the “Menagerie” was outfitted with motor coach bodywork, and properly equipped for the expedition with a ladder, brooms, shovels and a birdcage. Each window had shutters and a flower box complete with posies. It covered 3500 kilometers in 7 days, carrying 11 passengers from Posen, whose presence added points to their score

It is a Gregoire named La Menagerie. It is a 10 hp (Type Course) from 1912, a 4 cylinder car with 3 liters.
It arrives in San Sebastian at 21.09.1912 after a 7 days journey (3500 km) with 11 passengers. Its driver was Jean Porporato who won the Coupe de la Sarthe with a Gregoire and was succesfull in 1911/12 at Coupe de l'Auto.

The details that I'm sure about are that it's a Gregoire, it was driven by racing driver Jean Porporato, and the vehicle was named "La Ménagerie." He also took eleven passengers, and the rally to San Sebastian was in September 1912 [which this car subsequently won.] I'm only guessing as to the year of the car and model; my guess is it's a 14/24HP from 1911.

The car is a 1912 Grégoire.
Grégoire recognised the formula for the San Sebastian rally (September 1912) rewarded heavy loads and long distances so sent their vehicle to Posen in Poland (although others started as far afield as Russia)
The car, complete with its caravan body was nicknamed La Menagerie Grégoire, and weighed around 3 tons- as a result the chassis was strengthened. The engine was 79mm x 150mm
Its load included the experienced rally driver Jean Porporato, Mr Picard (the Berlin agent for Grégoire) and his wife, plus 8 more people, chimney pots, flower pots and a bird cage. After a journey of some 1470 miles over 7 days (at 25mph!) they won the event with a score of 144.9 points- easily beating an Hispano-Suiza to second place (116.6 points), the vehicle also winning the Prix de l'elegance.

This week's car is the Grégoire Roulotte, also called "La Ménagerie Grégoire" which you can read at the back of the car. It was driven to victory at the Posen-San Sebastian rallye by Jean Porporato on September 21, 1912. Along with him came 11 passengers on this 3500 km trip during 7 days. Not only being first in front of a Hispano-Suiza and a Berliet, the Grégoire also won the Prix d'Élégance, especially because of the flower pots beneath the windows. The concours winner's photo shows the passengers suitably dressed up as gypsies.
