What is it? Quiz #476

Do you recognise this car? This week’s quiz car is still on the road as you can see. The pre-war on the photograph drives around in South Africa and is the only one known that still exists. The original 60 cm high radiator was stolen from the car when it was being repaired in Cape Town. Sadly enough it is very likely the radiator was remelted and the coper was sold against scrap prize. A reward has been promised to the one that finds the radiator. But more than 10 years to date it has not yet been found.

Is this a story you have heard before and do you know what car we are talking about? Please comment below (in a maximum of 100 words) and tell us everything you know about this pre-war. If you send your answer before Monday you compete in the six-month competition, sponsored by Hans Compter Rare cars.

Have a good weekend everyone!

A stolen radiator adds up to the mystery of this 1907 Nordenfelt (Swedish?). Different sources claim it was made in Belgium others say France, and made between 1906 and 1907 at Société Usines Prunel in Puteaux after that till the end of 1909 on an unknown location. Aiming for distribution in Belgium, rumour has it that components were made by Cockerill of Liège, but they denied any involvement. Engines came from Bariquand et Marre. Nordenfelt’s were sold in the UK by Clifford Earp a former racing driver. English bodies supplied by Hewers or Withers, this is probably one of them.

The car maybe a 1907 Nordenfelt originally registered IJ 200 in County Down, Northern Ireland. After period use it ended up in a factory in Bessbrook carting steel from one factory to another. Discovered by John Scott of Belfast in the late 1960s it was sold to Mike Holt in 1986. He had a full restoration completed. The car was sold to South Africa some time later. Shame about the radiator.

This is a 1907 Nordenfelt 30/35 CV. The history of the marque is rather mysterious, but it seems that it was introduced in 1906 by the French companyLa Societé des Usines Prunel of Puteaux, itself a car builder under its own name from 1900 to 1907. The Nordenfelt cars were mainly intended to sell in Belgium, some parts being made in Liège. The British distributor was former racing driver Clifford Earp. Nordenfelt offered several models (12, 16, 20, 24/30, 30/35 and 40/45 CV), all powered by four-cylinder engines from Barriquand & Marre. Production ended in 1910.
